City Museum Hagen

The Hagen Historical Center (HCH) in the Eilpe district of Hagen housed the city museum, the city archive, the Westphalian music and literature archive as well as the offices of the Hagen history clubs and rooms for events from 1998 to mid-2017. It was located in a former part of the Wippermann chain factory building. It was the historical and cultural center of Hagen and gained national importance due to its temporary exhibitions and other activities. The city museum was closed at the end of 2015. It was supposed to reopen in autumn 2017 near the art quarter . It is currently planned to open it there in 2021 on the occasion of the city's 275th anniversary with a newly designed exhibition. In 2017 the city archive moved to the Hagen business premises due to a lack of space and low rents . Thus, the historical center has effectively ceased to exist as a place.

In the area of archeology , the Hagen Historical Center looks after the exploration and excavation of the leaf cave with important remains of Stone Age people.

In October 2005 the permanent exhibition on the history of the city of Hagen was opened in the historical center. The extensive presentation includes a tour of the city's history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Not only excellent and nationally significant exhibits are exhibited. The sophisticated multimedia equipment, which contains an archive of images, sound and information and can be called up in the exhibition on terminals, is one of the best museum presentations in North Rhine-Westphalia .

The associated city archive preserves the historical image and written sources from the city and region. These include, among other things, more than 250,000 image negatives and photographs, a library with around 25,000 books, some rare library holdings dating back to the late 15th century, as well as rare sheet music and writings from the 14th to 19th centuries. Century. The museum holdings include the Laufenberg-Wittmann porcelain collection, which contains rare services from the early 18th century. A coin and medal collection with around 65,000 individual items round off the holdings.

In the moated Werdringen castle , a castle from the 13th century, the Historical Center has had a branch since November 2004 - the Museum of Prehistory and Early History. The supra-regional exhibition collection, which is oriented towards the northwestern Sauerland , is one of the most important geological and archaeological museums in North Rhine-Westphalia and has a very high number of visitors. The diverse museum educational programs for school classes, children and young people as well as adults are particularly popular.

With the Historisches Centrum Online (HCO) , the HCH operates one of the largest and oldest (since 1994!) Local and regional history, general historical and museum-specific offers in Germany with a portal function. The HCO is internationally networked and cooperates with important institutions such as the Humboldt University in Berlin, the German Museum Association , the International Museum Council and the H-Net . In addition, the Historical Center hosts the catalogs and information portals contemporary history , early modern times and museums in the international network of the Virtual Library .

Project work with schoolchildren, which are presented to the general public in the context of temporary exhibitions (such as the presentation Schule @ Museum in 2011 and 2012), is an important field of activity of the Museum Education of the Historical Center.

The Hagen Historical Center has been part of the culture department headed by Tayfun Belgin since 2012 . Ralf Blank is responsible for the museums and archives .
