Eilpe is the name of a district in the independent city Hagen in the southern Ruhr area , which in 1876 together with the district Wehringhausen was incorporated. In 2018 Eilpe had 11,836 inhabitants.

location

The district is located southeast of the center of Hagen predominantly on the left bank of the Volme and together with Dahl the municipality Eilpe / Dahl . Between the two districts is the local situation Ambrock .

history

Eilpe is one of the old settlements in the Hagen area. Traces of a Mesolithic settlement from around 10,000 years ago have been found on the ridge at the "Riegerbusch".

An Eilper Hof is mentioned for the first time in a document in 1019 in a deed of donation from Emperor Heinrich II to the Archbishop of Cologne, abbot of the Deutz monastery, probably a lower court of the upper court of Hagen. Around this Deutzer Hof at the confluence of the Eilper brook into the Volme, further courtyards and cottages gradually emerged , which either belonged to a main courtyard or became independent.

The farmers Eilpe belonged to the county of Mark in the parish and court of Hagen . In the treasury of Grafschaft Mark of 1486, 16 taxable farm owners are named in the Eylper Burschop with a tax between 1 oirt (¼ Gg) and 8  gold guilders .

Before 1827, the Selbecke district was incorporated into Eilpe.

Due to the increase in population, the simultaneous industrialization and the increasing interdependence with the city of Hagen, the municipality board of Eilpe approved on May 28, 1875 to be incorporated into the city of Hagen. The incorporation of Eilpe came into force on January 1, 1876.

The cemetery of the Jewish community in Hagen on Hohle Strasse has existed since 1920 .

Eilpe is home to the Hagen Historical Center with the city museum, the city archive and the Westphalian music and literature archive. In addition, the Hagenring gallery and the Hagen LWL open-air museum in the Selbecke district .

Economy and Infrastructure

The settlement of blade smiths from Solingen in Eilpe in 1661 ensured an economic upturn in the town, some of whose houses built in 1665 as Lange Riege are still preserved today. Knife and sword blades were produced here well into the 19th century. On the other hand, with paper production in the paper mills near Delstern founded by Matthias Vorster in 1696, a branch of industry with export relationships to Russia and many European countries, as well as to North America during the 18th century. To the south of Eilpe, Grauwacke is still mined in the quarry near Ambrock .

The district is connected to the federal motorway 45 via the Hagen-Süd motorway junction via a feeder road crossing the Volmetal . Furthermore, the federal highway 54 and the Volmetalbahn with their own stop run past Eilpe.
