The Gelsenkirchen-Horst pumping station was commissioned in 1958 by the Emschergenossenschaft hydraulic engineering works on the grounds of the Nordsternpark .

The pumping station was needed due to subsidence caused by mining above the Nordstern mine field . Its catchment area in Horst is 316 hectares. In the past, it pumped the collected water into the higher-lying and diked Emscher, today it discharges most of it to the Bottrop sewage treatment plant via the underground Emscher canal . This canal is part of the project to convert the Emscher system to relieve the Emscher of sewage.

When it rains, the average dry weather flow increases from 120 l / s to a maximum of 10,000 l / s, an amount of water that the old pumping station could no longer handle. For this reason, the small pink pumping station next to it was built in 1980, which is switched on when it rains and, if necessary, pumps water through the green pipes into the Emscher.

In 1997 the old pumping station was renovated as part of the Federal Garden Show, clad with blue glass and provided with an exhibition pavilion on the roof. The plans for the design come from the Düsseldorf artist Jürgen LIT Fischer .

From September 2008 to the end of 2009, a rainwater treatment system will be built at the pumping station, because in future the clean rainwater that does not require clarification and the wastewater will be disposed of separately.

The pumping station is part of the Route of Industrial Heritage .
