history

In the summer of 1998, the region where Camp Red Cloud is located was hit by heavy rainfall, which caused deadly rapids and widespread damage to military facilities. Although no soldiers were killed, many Korean civilians lost their lives and the livestock on farms was severely decimated by the storm. A large hill behind the base was also severely eroded by the floods. A considerable part of the camp was turned into a mud landscape. The damage resulted in a restricted operational readiness that could only be repaired after weeks. In addition to accommodation, the museum of the 2nd US Infantry Division was also badly damaged.

In its history, Camp Red Cloud has often been the scene of various demonstrations and anti-American protests directed against the US military presence in Korea. The most serious incident occurred in 2002, when some demonstrators threw Molotov cocktails on the perimeter of the base, burning various holes in the fences. The cause of the protests was a previous accident in which two Korean school girls were run over by the US military . After these incidents the boundaries were reinforced by ramparts.
