The Kleine Emscher is a 10.3 km long arm of the Emscher in Oberhausen and Duisburg with a catchment area of 35 km². It was the estuary of the Emscher from 1910 to 1949 .

Considerable subsidence in the Duisburg area had led to the water from the Emscher building up in the western Ruhr area since 1900. In 1910, the Emschergenossenschaft therefore relocated the estuary further north, into what is now the Kleine Emscher. In 1949 the course was then moved further north so that the Emscher flows into the Rhine at Dinslaken today. The original estuary until 1910 is the Alte Emscher .

The lower course of the oxbow lake is still an open, canalized sewer with concrete floors for household and industrial sewage. It rises from a main collector in Oberhausen- Buschhausen and flows in a north-westerly direction through Marxloh to Walsum , where it flows into the Rhine north of the southern port . From the Duisburg-Walsum sewage treatment plant, only purified water flows into the river bed, which has already been partially dismantled. The river and its inflows have also already been ecologically improved below the sewage treatment plant. The Kleine Emscher is piped for the last 1200 meters to the confluence with the Rhine. The Green Path , a cycling and hiking trail on the former route of the Emschertal Railway, runs along the river bed .

The Kleine Emscher is cut off from the Emscher river system, receives inflows from the Röttgersbach, the main collector Ober-Marxloh and the Holtener Mühlenbach and flows into the Rhine at km 791.3 as a right tributary.
