The Königsgrube Park is a wild park on the fallow land of the former Königsgrube colliery . Today it is used as a local recreation area and for various leisure activities and is part of the Route of Industrial Culture .

history

In the city triangle of Bochum, Wanne-Röhlinghausen and Wattenscheid, the two neighboring collieries, Königsgrube and Hannover , were built in the middle of the 19th century . Hanover was in operation from 1854 to 1973, most of the daytime facilities were demolished, the Malokow Tower and other facilities are now a branch of the LWL industrial museum . Königsgrube was in operation from 1855 to 1967 and was then completely demolished. Initial plans envisaged a rubble dump and further residential developments on the site, but a citizens' initiative in the 1970s then created the park for the nearby districts.

terrain

The almost 40 hectare, extensively cared for area is a typical example of the development of the Ruhr area over the past 150 years. The initially existing rural cultural landscape can still be seen in some farmsteads. The collieries, works railways and heaps bear witness to the mining past. The renaturation by means of the Königsgrube park and allotment gardens shows the continued use after the structural change. The 3.5 km long Glückauf Natur adventure trail ! of the Eastern Ruhr Biological Station provides access to the various stations. The specially created geological ramp makes the typical rock sequence of the Ruhr area visible and compares it with the lifespan of trees using tree slices.

Species-rich fauna and flora have settled on the site. The compacted soil with slag residue offers a dry, special soil climate, including for grasshoppers . In addition, the wet areas, ponds and ponds offer completely different habitats, for example for midwife toads . The dump meadows in particular show the influence of soil moisture on the vegetation. The peregrine falcon breeds on the site.

In 2004 the district park was placed under landscape protection.

Recreational use

Several ponds were created in the park as subsidence waters. The ecological allotment garden Kraut & Rüben has been located on Günnigfelder Strasse since 1998 . A model airfield is operated on the heap to the southwest.

The park is on the Emscher Park cycle path and close to the ore railway line . There is a connection to the Emscher Park Radweg Nord via the regional cycle route R 27.
