tasks

As with all other biological stations in North Rhine-Westphalia , the tasks include the supervision of designated protected areas, here in the urban areas of Herne and Bochum. In order to realize the biotope network in the work area, the station also works on industrial wastelands, heaps, a former household waste dump, the former lawn of an outdoor swimming pool, mountain lakes, former coal settling basins and rain retention systems.

Flora , fauna and biotopes are recorded using geographic information systems in their care areas and in some cases beyond . Geographical surveys, breeding bird mapping and the biological determination of the water quality are examples of investigations carried out. The data obtained, as well as the results of our urban biotope type mapping for Herne and Bochum, are managed and maintained in the station's computer-aided "Geographical Information System (GIS)". The biological station initiates and accompanies necessary landscape conservation measures in its care area. She carries out success checks and monitors her areas. She advises the city and state authorities. Staff at the station are also involved in drawing up the water quality report. She created an urban ecological contribution (STÖB) for Herne with the Ruhr Regional Association for the structural interior.

The station carries out intensive public relations work. This includes lectures, guided tours, exhibitions and information boards. Together with partners, it carried out competitions such as “Green instead of gray”, a competition for greening facades and “Garden of Paradise in Herne”, a competition for gardens in Herne.
