The fallow land in Vondern is today's fallow land on the site of the former Vondern colliery . It is used as a recreational area, art installation and connecting space. It belongs to the Emscher Landscape Park and is a station on the Route of Industrial Culture .

history

The Vondern colliery was sunk at the end of the 19th century on the edge of the Emscher near Vondern Castle . After the construction of a coking plant and economic growth up to the First World War, it was shut down in the 1930s with the global economic crisis. As a branch of the Jacobi colliery , it was used for weather control until 1965 and then completely dismantled. The area polluted with contaminated sites was then left to its own devices.

terrain

The Emscherschnellweg (A42) has been running over the northern part of the site since 1974 . Access to the former colliery settlement of Vondern and Vondern Castle is guaranteed through a pedestrian and bicycle tunnel . South from the terrain is Rhein Herne channel , the Emscher and lying between the two Emscher island limited. The arched Schlaich Bridge, named after its architect, provides the transition to the Ripshorst house and further to the Neue Mitte Oberhausen . Directly at the bridge, the Läppkes Mühlenbach crosses under the canal by means of a culvert and flows into the Emscher. Breilstrasse closes the area to the east and the L450 to the west.

A species-rich fauna has developed on the site, mostly dry grass communities and alternating humid plant communities. Old crops like Rapunzel bellflower , formerly used for washing soapwort , the wild carrot or yellow evening primrose have settled. The information center in the nearby Ripshorst house regularly offers natural history tours on the fallow land.

Artistic development

In the east-west direction, the wasteland has been well developed for years through the Emscher-Park-Weg and the Emscher Park cycle path , but this was not the case for the north-south direction for a long time. From 2008 the New Emschertal Working Group and local artists developed a concept to emphasize the connecting space in north-south direction and make it more attractive. The basic idea was the idea of a "landscaping hut" in which different groups work together. In collaboration with artists, unemployed and residents, the route was optimized, various works of art were set up, relics of the former colliery were refurbished, islands of calm and new views created. The work was carried out in a highly manual manner. The concept was supported by the Emschergenossenschaft , the Ruhr Regional Association and the city of Oberhausen .

Objects and design

  • A “blue ribbon” made of cobblestones as colored stripes leads from the Läppkes sewage park via Haus Ripshorst through the wasteland Vondern to Vondern Castle.
  • The underpass of the A42 was brightened by a light installation and two graphic full-format wall designs were provided on both sides by the artists Bruno Schulte and Jan Tesche. The change of the district location from the pure skimming off of material goods to the immaterial valorization, renaturation and new recognition is abstracted and made tangible to the district people as a horizontally running film; to facilitate a new identification with the living environment and to enable an appropriation.
  • On the northern side, the flanks of the motorway have been partially decorated with mosaics from Guido Berndsen's student project.
  • Near the underpass, the “fallow throne” by Will Brands, which he built together with students, members of the Ruhrwerkstatt and local residents, is well hidden in the natural vegetation.
  • Finds from the area are set up on quiet islands along the way. Residents had gathered together the remains of the old wall, metal parts and other remnants from the mining and coking period.
  • Five “ semaphores ” were set up at prominent points and within sight of each other. Different shaped, rusty bars each carry a blue glass that glows in the dark. The energy is supplied by solar panels.
  • The red “step tower” by Hartwig Kompa on the western edge of the site is visible from the motorway. It also refers to the color of the high-voltage pylons.
  • The reinforced concrete sculpture "Durchblicksmauern" by Guido Berndsen is intended to "provide a new, focused view of the surroundings" at its location on the Emscher dike.
  • With the "Emscher Column" on the Emscher Island, Hermann ES Richter wants to show the technical reshaping of the landscape.
