The former factory inn of the Gutehoffnungshütte in Oberhausen was built in 1913 based on a design by the architect Carl Weigle . Today it is part of the Technology Center for Environmental Protection (TZU).

The factory inn is one of the architecturally remarkable buildings that Gutehoffnungshütte (GHH) had built in the first decades of the 20th century in order to upgrade its corporate headquarters on Essener Strasse in Oberhausen. While the construction of the main warehouse and the third administration building was delayed by the First World War, Carl Weigle's design for the works inn could still be implemented in 1913. The building, which was surrounded by a park and partly designed with neoclassical stylistic devices, was designed almost as a counterpart to the nearby Oberhausen Castle , and not only served to entertain and accommodate company guests, but also offered meeting rooms and a large hall with a stage, which was available for various types of events. In addition, there was a large wine cellar with a tasting corner and a bowling alley in the basement.

The factory inn, which was damaged in the Second World War, was restored, but lost its importance due to the break-up of the GHH Group and the gradual withdrawal of the steel industry from Oberhausen. When it was most in use, the building was used in three functional areas for lunch for up to 4000 people. In addition to the main hall, there was a guest casino for around 100 people and a small director's casino, both with waiter service.

New building TZU IV

In 1987 the building was listed as a historical monument. In connection with the development of the new center and the preparations for the International Building Exhibition Emscher Park (IBA), the concept of a technology center environment has been developed in the existing building should be integrated. In 1991, an international architectural competition was held, in which the plans of the French team Reichen et Robert (Paris) were awarded. The existing factory inn was renovated and now, as TZU I, includes approx. 2,800 m² of office space and a conference and congress center with a total area of 1,200 m². It was supplemented by the new TZU II building, which was placed in the background as an arched two-storey structure and offers around 3,800 m² of office space. In 1997 the extension building TZU IV was opened, while the Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology , which is located around 2 km to the east, is called TZU III .

The factory inn is a stop on the Route of Industrial Culture .
