action

Phil and Claire Foster are a married couple from New Jersey, he works as a tax consultant and she as a freelance real estate agent. When their friends Brad and Haley want to get a divorce, they realize that their marriage has broken down too. Their weekly entertainment evenings ( Date Night ) have long since become routine.

When Claire has made herself particularly pretty for the date night at the center of the film's plot, Phil plans to take her to one of Manhattan's hottest restaurants. But since he has no reservation, the two spontaneously pretend to be the Tripplehorn couple after the table attendant called out this name without success. During the meal, the crooks Collins and Armstrong appear and demand that the alleged triple horns hand over a USB memory stick that belongs to the gang boss Joe Miletto. Even the attempts to explain that they are not the triple horns and do not have the memory stick do not change anything. When they are threatened by the two men, Phil claims that the USB stick is in a boathouse in Central Park .

Arriving at the boathouse, Claire pretends to look for the stick under a floor plank. While Collins and Armstrong turn their backs on Phil, Phil takes the chance to knock them down and flees across a lake with Claire in a boat. The first way leads you to the police. Once there, they tell Detective Arroyo their story. However, you suddenly see Collins and Armstrong in the bureau and realize that these are police officers who were probably bribed by gang boss Miletto. Again they flee, decide not to trust the police for the time being and find the true triple horns on their own. By pretending to be friends of will.i.am in the restaurant, they can find out the cell phone number on which the table reservation for the Tripplehorns was made.

With the help of Holbrooke Grant, a former real estate customer of Claire, they can locate the signal of the cell phone and get the address of the Tripplehorns. Since the police officers Collins and Armstrong also show up at Holbrooke, Phil and Claire have to flee again. After Grant's Audi R8 is stolen , they drive to the Tripplehorns. When you get to them, you find out their story and that they are just about to run away. They hand over the flash memory to the Fosters and flee. When Phil and Claire want to disappear too, Collins and Armstrong suddenly appear. A wild chase with Collins and Armstrong and several police units begins. This leads to the Audi R8 getting wedged in a taxi, with the taxi ultimately sinking into the water along with the flash memory. Before that, however, Phil had looked at the files on it and noticed that it was not Miletto but the prosecutor Crenshaw who was being blackmailed with the captivating images. He, in turn, is in league with Miletto and is a regular in one of Miletto's brothels.

With further help from Holbrooke Grant, Phil and Claire attempt to convict prosecutor Crenshaw in the brothel. They pretend to be prostitutes and pimps and thus gain access to the brothel. Both have to dance for Crenshaw to be heard by him. When they tell Crenshaw that they are the Tripplehorns, Collins and Armstrong appear. They are taken to the brothel roof and threatened by the armed gangsters. But a SWAT team appears in the helicopter in time because Holbrooke has informed the upright policewoman Arroyo. Crenshaw and Miletto, as well as Collins and Armstrong, are arrested.

background

production

The film was shot in New York , Los Angeles and Pasadena .

Steve Carell and Tina Fey's erotic dance towards the end of the film was improvised by the cast while Shawn Levy shouted obscure instructions to them to add to the embarrassment of the situation. Chase "Taste" Tripplehorn mentioned to Phil Foster that he chose the code name Tripplehorn because he was a fan of Jeanne Tripplehorn . Ray Liotta starred in the 2010 US comedy Crazy on the Outside opposite Jeanne Tripplehorn. Furthermore, during his escape with Whippit from her apartment, Taste says: Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat. This is a saying based on a quote from Heat , in which William Fichtner was seen in 1995. Tina Fey graduated from the University of Virginia in 1992 and wears a t-shirt with that university written on it for the scene she wants to go to bed. When Phil and Claire ask for sam.i.am in the restaurant instead of will.i.am , it is either a reference to the American hip-hop producer Samiyam or the character Sam-I-Am the classic children's books by Dr. Seuss. Gal Gadot , who appears in the film as Israeli model Natanya, is actually an Israeli model. Your name was chosen based on the Israeli port city of Netanya , which is by no means a typical Israeli first name. The name of the club The Peppermint Hippo is a tribute to as The Spearmint Rhino called gentlemen's clubs were elected. Mark Wahlberg, who appears in several scenes, is always seen bare-chested throughout the film. Care was taken not to film the tattoo on his left shoulder that shows Bob Marley . Although Mark Wahlberg is shown dressed in a minimalist manner in all scenes, a costume assistant for Mark Wahlberg is shown in the credits . Outtakes were added to the film credits .

reception

“Director and producer Shawn Levy may never get an Oscar nomination, but financially at least he's one of the most successful craftsmen of his kind in Hollywood. Films like “ Night at the Museum ”, “ The Pink Panther ”, “ Cheaper by the Dozen ” and “ Fully Married ” were made under his direction - entertainment cinema for the very broad public. "Date Night" fits seamlessly into the oeuvre . The comedic recipe for getting ordinary people into extraordinary situations is effectively applied here. The normality of the American middle class is gleefully taken under constant fire. The dialogues are quick and quick-witted. Tina Fey in particular is convincing as a suburban mom with a loose mouth, and Mark Wahlberg has a striking guest appearance with a very bare upper body. "

“In the spirit of classics like Midnight Reveal (1939), director Shawn Levy (“ Night at the Museum ”) resurrects the spirit of old-fashioned screwball comedies. He sends the two comedy specialists Steve Carell ("The Office") and Tina Fey ("30 Rock") on an over-the-top odyssey through the Big Apple - without lapsing into hectic or annoying screaming orgies. Instead, original puns and hilarious slapstick dominate: Carell and Fey's striptease alone in sex robot mode makes the diaphragm shake. Not to mention their innumerable awkward attempts to overcome the dangers of the urban jungle with the means of provincial life. "

“Well-behaved provincials end up in the swamp of the big city for one night and have to drive a tough course in order to survive. From this two-line premise, specialist Shawn Levy ("Night at the Museum") develops an over-the-top, fast-paced comedy in which humor and hysteria are in balance, giving the impression that even more hits would have been possible despite some good gags. The focus is on situation comedy with absurd peaks, which also characterize some dialogue duels. Approaches to Judd Apatow's somewhat crude verbal humor are also noticeable and are savored with relish by Fey ("30 Rock") and Carell (" Get Smart "). Regardless of this, this date night ultimately remains morally stable and sinless, even if Mark Wahlberg does his funny guest role topless and Carell and Fey show a pole dance in a strip club as if RoboCop had gone to the showgirls . Even if supposed adults play the main role here, this date night is a youth-friendly entertainment offering, which in addition to its two comedy magnets also offers stars such as Mark Ruffalo, James Franco and Mila Kunis in small roles. "

“Excessive mixture of real-life drama, action comedy and crime thriller devoid of any inner logic, which merely strings extreme experiences together. Overly serious relationship discussions do not fit into the over-the-top whole. "

“Confusion plus persecution, or vice versa, is the ridiculous and noisy slam riot motto here. A comedy that at first [...] has a hard time getting "into the push", but then gets off to a good start, comes up with some brilliant tin gags [...] and, moreover, from these two excited "normalos" from Foster -The couple is alive. Predictable joke, with a nice running guy gag, when, for example, a cool Mark Wahlberg, somehow involved with constant topless appeal, constantly presented his well-trained upper body, smirking and annoyed, some rustic improvisations [...], necessary white lies and so on ... and so on: The comedians Tina Fey and Steve Carell are "really good" on this "semi-wild" na-ja screen show. "
