Phil and Claire Foster are a married couple from New Jersey, he works as a tax consultant and she as a freelance real estate agent. When their friends Brad and Haley want to get a divorce, they realize that their marriage has broken down too. Their weekly entertainment evenings ( Date Night ) have long since become routine.
When Claire has made herself particularly pretty for the date night at the center of the film's plot, Phil plans to take her to one of Manhattan's hottest restaurants. But since he has no reservation, the two spontaneously pretend to be the Tripplehorn couple after the table attendant called out this name without success. During the meal, the crooks Collins and Armstrong appear and demand that the alleged triple horns hand over a USB memory stick that belongs to the gang boss Joe Miletto. Even the attempts to explain that they are not the triple horns and do not have the memory stick do not change anything. When they are threatened by the two men, Phil claims that the USB stick is in a boathouse in Central Park .
Arriving at the boathouse, Claire pretends to look for the stick under a floor plank. While Collins and Armstrong turn their backs on Phil, Phil takes the chance to knock them down and flees across a lake with Claire in a boat. The first way leads you to the police. Once there, they tell Detective Arroyo their story. However, you suddenly see Collins and Armstrong in the bureau and realize that these are police officers who were probably bribed by gang boss Miletto. Again they flee, decide not to trust the police for the time being and find the true triple horns on their own. By pretending to be friends of will.i.am in the restaurant, they can find out the cell phone number on which the table reservation for the Tripplehorns was made.
With the help of Holbrooke Grant, a former real estate customer of Claire, they can locate the signal of the cell phone and get the address of the Tripplehorns. Since the police officers Collins and Armstrong also show up at Holbrooke, Phil and Claire have to flee again. After Grant's Audi R8 is stolen , they drive to the Tripplehorns. With further help from Holbrooke Grant, Phil and Claire attempt to convict prosecutor Crenshaw in the brothel. They pretend to be prostitutes and pimps and thus gain access to the brothel. Both have to dance for Crenshaw to be heard by him. When they tell Crenshaw that they are the Tripplehorns, Collins and Armstrong appear.
