biography
Burt Kwouk was born to Chinese parents in Lancashire, England, but moved with them to Shanghai shortly after his birth . His wealthy parents sent him to the United States in 1947 to study politics and economics. After the communist revolution in China in 1949, however, his family lost their fortune and Kwouk was forced to return to China for a few years. In the 1950s he moved to England, where he soon turned to acting and henceforth took part in numerous movies and television series.
His most famous role was as servant Cato in the Pink Panther series , in the service of Inspector Clouseau . Kwouk also had two supporting roles in a James Bond film; in Goldfinger he played Mr. Ling and in the film You Only Live Twice a character named "Number 3". He was also a Chinese general in the Bond parody Casino Royale (1967) and a Chinese head of state in In the Fisherman's Shoes (1968). From 2002 to 2010 he worked as "Entwistle" in the British television series Last of the Summer Wine . Overall, he was seen in more than 140 productions. Kwouk was often seen in stereotypical Asian roles as well as comedic parts, but in some productions - such as the head of a prison camp in the series Tenko (1981-1984) - he was also able to demonstrate his talent as a dramatic actor.
In 2011, Burt Kwouk was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire . He died in May 2016 at the age of 85 after suffering from cancer. He left behind his wife, Caroline Tebbs, who had been married since 1961, and their son Christopher.
