Richard Mulligan (born November 13, 1932 in New York , USA , † September 26, 2000 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actor in theater, film and television. He is the younger brother of film director Robert Mulligan . On television Mulligan was seen in various TV series, including from 1977 to 1981 in the sitcom Soap - Sweet Home and from 1988 to 1995 in the hit sitcom Harry's Nest .

Career

After studying at Columbia University , Mulligan began working in the theater and made his stage debut in 1960 in the play All the way home by Tad Mosel, based on a novel by James Agee . In 1966 he starred in the movie The Clique by Sidney Lumet in addition Candice Bergen , Larry Hagman , Joanna Pettet and Joan Hackett , his future second wife, one of the lead roles. In the only 16 episodes comprehensive television series The Hero he played the male lead from 1966 to 1967 alongside Mariette Hartley . 1970 Mulligan served as General Custer in the movie Little Big Man by Arthur Penn to see.

From 1977 to 1981 he played the role of Burt Campbell in the soap opera Soap - Trautes Heim . In 1980 he received an Emmy Award for this role . After the series was canceled at short notice due to disagreements with the production company, he mainly had supporting roles in film and television productions in the following years. One exception was his starring role in Blake Edwards ' film SOB - Hollywood's Last Howler from 1981.

In 1988, Mulligan was slated to play an alien in the second season of Starship Enterprise: The Next Century . The role then went to actor Earl Boen . Since they wanted to appreciate Mulligan and the extraterrestrial being had no name until then, it was called Nagillum , an ananym of the name Mulligan .

From 1988 to 1995 he played the main role of the pediatrician Dr. Harry Weston in the television series Harry's Nest , for which he received both an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award in 1989.

Private

Mulligan was married to his first wife, Patricia Jones, from 1955 to 1960. With her he had a son who was his only child. He was married to actress Joan Hackett from 1966 to 1973. In 1978 he married a third time, the marriage with Lenore Stevens lasted until 1990. In 1992 Mulligan married the porn actress Rachel Ryan, but the marriage with her only lasted until 1993.

In September 2000, Mulligan died of colon cancer in Los Angeles at the age of 67 .
