action
Milton Parker, an eccentric game inventor, dies after losing to a video game with his nurse. Parker's greedy distant relatives show up at his house to read the will. Attorney Charles Bernstein announces that the winner of a Scavenger Hunt will win the $ 200 million property. The candidates form five teams and are involved in various mishaps.
There are the following teams:
- Parker's widowed son-in-law, Henry Motley, and his four children.
- The servants: the French cook Henri, valet Jenkins, chauffeur Jackson and the French maid Babbette.
- The moronic taxi driver Marvin Dummitz.
- Parkers widowed sister Mildred Carruthers, her lawyer Stuart Sellsome, and their son Georgie.
- The nephews Kenny and Jeff Stevens and Mildred's stepdaughter Lisa.
Each group receives a list of tips on how to purchase 100 items worth 5 to 100 points. The objects can be acquired by any means, except through purchase. They are set up in five different places on the property. The team with the most points at 5:00 p.m. wins.
Chaos arises while the scavenger hunters occasionally deliver objects under the supervision of Bernstein and Cornfeld.
Mildred, Stuart and Georgie try to win a stuffed bear at the carnival, to get a heavy safe from Stuart's office building and to steal the teeth of a native inhabitant. Stuart is teased by Scum's motorcycle gang after trying to steal a foxtail from a motorcycle. The team later steals from the servants and the team of nephews.
The servants try to steal a toilet from a hotel and steal the till in a supermarket robbery. Eventually they are locked up while trying to steal a microscope from a university laboratory.
Kenny, Jeff, and Lisa “borrow” things like a clown's head from a box devil and an obese person. They borrow a bulletproof vest from Arvilla. They also buy nitrous oxide, steal a motorcycle policeman's uniform and are locked up in a football team's dressing room when they try to steal a helmet.
Dummittz tries unsuccessfully to steal a Rolls-Royce's grille and is run over multiple times while attempting to commit insurance fraud. Sam, a security guard at a bridal wear store, catches him trying to steal a wedding dress. Sam joins him and together they steal a knight's armor, with Marvin disguising himself as a mummy and Sam putting on the armor. The passed out Sam is robbed by Mildred, Stuart and Georgie, whereupon Marvin teams up with Merle.
Motley tries to make his kids proud by purchasing a beehive, lifebuoy, and parachute. He tries to get a medicine ball from a gym and impress coach Lars, which results in him being thrown off the second floor, trying to catch a medicine ball thrown at him.
To the horror of the zookeeper, each team steals an ostrich from the San Diego Zoo .
A car chase ensues on the way back to the mansion, with three teams giving up to help Kenny, Jeff, and Lisa win against the unfair team of Mildred, Stuart, and Georgie. Seconds before the end of the competition, Sam, still wearing the armor, crawls into another camp and wins for the Stevens brothers and Lisa. The winners choose to share their wealth with everyone but Mildred, Stuart and Georgie.

reception
Scavenger Hunt received negative reviews. Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune described the film as “excruciatingly boring” and observed that “Coco and Little shut off a toilet; Randall is knocked down by a safe; Benjamin steals items from another team. Isn't that screaming? Are you laughing yourself dead? ” The New York Times wrote,“ When a movie's jokes are so plainly devoid of punchlines, only a mood of confusion can save the day. Mr. Schultz is doing well, which only messes up the film even more. "
People wrote that "an all-star cast tries unsuccessfully to get a laugh." TV Guide described the film as "an all-star comedy attempt that proves again that no actor is about bad material can triumph. "
Allmovie described it as an "absolutely miserable comedy." DVD Talk felt the film was "not good at all, but almost fascinating for its cast and the falseness of its approach to comedy." Blu-ray.com wrote, "It is a silly endeavor, but it is also exhausting to look at with its inherent harmlessness, which becomes a threat as the one-dimensional image spans nearly two hours of screen time. "
