Michael Schultz
Michael A. Schultz (born November 10, 1938 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American director and film producer .
Life
After completing his bachelor's thesis at the University of Wisconsin – Madison and Marquette University , he moved to Princeton University . There he directed a production of Waiting for Godot in 1966 .
In 1968 he joined the Negro Ensemble Company , which brought him to Broadway in 1969 . His breakthrough as a director came in 1972 with Lorraine Hansberry's To Be Young, Gifted and Black , which he rearranged for television.
Schultz's earliest film projects were shallow socially critical comedies such as Honeybaby, Honeybaby and Cooley High (1975), which culminated with Car Wash (1976) and Which Way is Up? (1977), with Richard Pryor in the lead role. Car Wash was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes International Film Festival in 1977 and Schultz received the “Technical Grand Prize” at the festival.
1978 led Schultz in the film version of the musical Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band director, for which he the highest budget received that an African-American had by this time received film director. The film received poor reviews after its release and became a commercial failure. Schultz's more successful films included Scavenger Hunt (1979) and The Chaotic Team (1987).
More recently, Schultz has often worked for television. He piloted well-known television series such as The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones and Picket Fences - Tatort Gartenzaun and directed several television films .
In 1991, Schultz was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame .
Schultz has been married to Gloria Schultz (stage name Lauren Jones ) since December 6, 1965 . His son Brandon Schultz works as an actor.
