Obie Award

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Obie Award is a theater award from the United States that has been donated and awarded by the New York newspaper The Village Voice since 1956 . It owes its name to the English abbreviation "OB", which means something like " O ff- B roadway ". Accordingly, it is also named as the Off-Broadway Theater Awards .

The Obie Awards were initiated by The Village Voice editor Edwin (Ed) Fancher. The theater prize also evaluates the financing and commercial implementation of a theater project. They were first awarded in 1956 under the direction of theater critic Jerry Tallmer. Off-Off-Broadway productions have also qualified for this award since 1964; it is awarded for both off-Broadway and off-off-Broadway performances. Off-Broadway refers to the theater scene in Manhattan and the smaller theaters with fewer than 100 seats are listed as "off-off".

This award is given to actors who show outstanding achievements in such off-Brodway plays. In the USA, the obie has the same meaning for stage artists as the Oscar has for cinema- makers .

The Obie Award is given in the following categories, but not every year.

  • Acting performance (performance)
  • Directed (Direction)
  • Best Theater Production
  • design
  • Special mentions (Special Citations)
  • Sustainable action (Sustained Achievement)
  • Lifetime (Lifetime Achievement)

Initially, categories were assigned according to the type of stage, the performance and the gender of the actors. Today there is a common category performance for male and female stage artists, which is filled with several artists. The nominations for the award are not officially announced.
