Wataru Yazawa ( Japanese 矢 澤 航 ; born July 2, 1991 in Yokohama ) is a Japanese hurdler who specializes in the 110-meter distance .

Athletic career

Wataru Yazawa gained his first international experience in 2008 when he was eliminated in the semi-finals of the Junior World Championships in Bydgoszcz with a new Japanese U18 record of 13.67 seconds. Two years later he finished seventh at the Junior World Championships in Moncton in 13.88 s. In 2011 he retired at the Asian Championships in Kobe with 14.19 s in the first round and then he reached the semi-finals at the Summer Universiade in Shenzhen , in which he was eliminated with 13.97 s. At the 2013 Asian Athletics Championships in Pune , he won the silver medal in 13.88 seconds behind the Chinese Jiang Fan and Abdulaziz al-Mandeel from Kuwait. He then finished fourth in the East Asian Games in Tianjin in 13.73 s. In 2016 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , but failed there with 13.88 s in the first round . In 2017 he again took part in the Asian Championships in Bhubaneswar and reached eighth place in 14.07 s.

In 2011, 2013 and 2016, Yazawa became the Japanese champion in the 110-meter hurdles .
