Adventures in Toyland (original title Babes in Toyland ) is an American adventure film from 1986 . Directed by Clive Donner , the screenplay was written by Paul Zindel based on an operetta by Glen MacDonough and Victor Herbert . The main role is cast with Drew Barrymore ; Richard Mulligan , Eileen Brennan , Keanu Reeves and Jill Schoelen can be seen in leading roles .

The eleven-year-old, somewhat precocious Lisa Piper, who lives in Cincinnati, not only supervises her siblings, she also has to do all the household chores, so she hardly has time to play. She benefits from the fact that she can do little with toys. On Christmas Eve Lisa is driving with her sister Mary and her boyfriend Jack when there is an accident. Lisa is thrown out of the car and wakes up in fictional toy land after a deep faint. There Mary Contrary is supposed to marry the unloved Barnaby Barnicle, although she loves Jack Nimble. Lisa manages to prevent the wedding. When she discovers that Barnicle wants to take power in Toyland, she turns to the toy maker along with Contrary and Nimble. In return, he asks her to believe that toys have a life of their own, which Lisa allows them to do. After the toy maker is satisfied, he sets up a toy army and drives Barnicle out of toy land. Contrary and Nimble can now get married.
Lisa returns to her home and to her siblings and when she wakes up she believes that her experience was only a dream.

The operetta Babes in Toyland by Glen MacDonough and Victor Herbert had previously been filmed several times for the cinema or television, especially the 1934 version with Laurel and Hardy , which ran in Germany under the name Revenge is sweet , and the 1961 version Disney movie riot in toy land .
Production, publication
The film was shot in Munich . It was produced for television and aired on December 19, 1986 by the National Broadcasting Company . In Germany it was released in cinemas on December 17, 1987. While the original film was around 140 minutes long, the video version has been shortened considerably. Heidi Wujek designed the costumes.
criticism
Rotten Tomatoes described the film as a "charming traditional fable".
