Glen MacDonough (born November 12, 1870 in Stamford , Connecticut , United States ; † March 30, 1924 ibid) was an American author, songwriter and librettist who gained fame primarily through his work on Victor Herbert's operetta Babes in Toyland .

Life

Glen MacDonough was the son of theater manager Thomas B. MacDonough and actress and writer Laura Don, so his future career almost fell into place. He began his career as a journalist in New York and also wrote short stories. His first own work is entitled The Prodigal Father , which was mentioned in the newspaper in 1892 under the heading "Meetings of the day". The piece is a comedy with songs, a musical composition common at the time. His second work, The Algerian , was created in 1893 in collaboration with the then prominent composer and music critic Reginald De Koven . In the following years, MacDonough devoted much of his time to writing farces and comedies, as well as writing scripts and lyrics for a number of musical comedies, including Miss Dynamite (1894) and Delmonico’s (1895). His name is linked to more than two dozen pieces and musical works, most of which have been forgotten over time, but not Babes in Toyland .

MacDonough wrote the lyrics for the operetta Chris and the Wonderful Lamp (1899) with the music of John Philip Sousa , known for his marching music. The operetta is still performed today. He was also one of the various authors and songwriters of the melodies for Lyman Frank Baum's first musical performance of his book The Wizard of Oz from 1902. Between 1896 and 1909, MacDonough worked with Victor Herbert on four other operettas in Toyland alongside Babes in Toyland , namely The Gold Bug , It Happened in Nordland , Wonderland and Algeria , renamed The Rose of Algeria in 1908 . He also adapted the libretto for the operetta Wiener Leben (1901) composed by Johann Strauss for the American market, as well as for Franz Lehar's operetta Der Graf von Luxemburg . MacDonough wrote the book for the Broadway musical comedy The Midnight Sons in 1909.

MacDonough often worked with the poet Anne Caldwell, with whom he wrote many songs and musical sketches, such as Mon Of Love , By The Sea , Canjoharie , Raggedy Ann and Bring 'Em Back . The Broadway revue Tintypes presented some of these songs there in 1980.

The lyricist and composer, who wrote music texts continuously until his death, was one of the nine founders of the ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). His last work was published by MacDonough in 1923, a play called Within Four Walls .

Private

In 1896 MacDonough married Margaret Jefferson in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts . Glen MacDonough died in 1924 of complications from a stroke . His grave is in Valleau Cemetery in Ridgewood , Bergen County , New Jersey .
