action

Vincent MacKenna is a grumpy, unsympathetic, retired, often drunk, horse-racing addicted Vietnam War veteran who owes a lot of money. Vincent's wife lives in an expensive luxury retirement home because she suffers from Alzheimer's and no longer recognizes him. Vincent regularly picks up her laundry to wash at home, pretending to be a doctor to her. He's been months behind with payments for his wife's stay. Vincent's few other friends are the heavily pregnant Russian prostitute Daka, with whom he occasionally has fun, and his cat Felix. When single nurse Maggie moves in next to Vincent with her twelve-year-old son Oliver, she hires him to take care of Oliver while she works. Vincent agrees because he can use the money well. Maggie has been under stress at work and has been fighting for custody of her son since her lawyer husband David cheated on her several times.

Vincent's idea of "taking care" includes visits to the racecourse and bars. After a while, the unlikely couple, Vincent and Oliver, begin to help each other get on better with their environment. On the racecourse, Oliver realizes that outsiders with low chances of winning promise high profits. When they pool their money and bet $ 10 on a three-way bet, they can cash in $ 8,000 at the betting company after they win. When Vincent witnesses how Oliver is teased by a classmate, he shows him how to defend himself against bigger ones. With perseverance and cleverness, Oliver finds surprisingly positive aspects in Vincent. When his wife later dies while Vincent himself is in hospital because of a stroke, it becomes clear how emotional Vincent really is behind his tough facade.

Oliver's father finds out where Vincent has taken Oliver with him and uses this as an excuse to get joint custody. Maggie forbids Vincent to take care of Oliver. But Vincent does not give up. In school, Brother Geraghty gives the students the task of naming a “ saint ” of the present, who is suitable for his good deeds. Oliver begins researching Vincent's life and questions people from his area. During a ceremony, the children introduce their candidates, who are then asked to go on stage and have a medal hung around their necks. Vincent becomes “St. Vincent ". Daka is having her baby and at the conciliatory end of the film you see all the protagonists in a group, joking and eating.

In July 2013, the role of ex-husband of McCarthy's character was cast with Scott Adsit .

reception

criticism

St. Vincent received mostly positive reviews. On Metacritic , the film received a Metascore of 64/100 based on 39 reviews; on Rotten Tomatoes , 77 percent of the 167 reviews were positive.

Richard Roeper gave the film an "A" rating, adding that Murray's portrayal could earn it a Golden Globe .

Barbara Schweizerhof from epd Film judged that this so worn-out story was still a lot of pleasure "in the execution of Murray and Lieberher". "The thesis that a lesson in bad behavior is often particularly good for children" has seldom been "presented more convincingly". Ultimately, forgive “the film […] its sentimental, soapy end and its criminally underemployed top ensemble […] because you can just watch Bill Murray for hours”, “even if he only waters potted plants while smoking”.

The editorial team of Cinema summed up: "Bill Murray in the role of his life - a grouchy fellow conquered the hearts of the audience."

Björn Becher from Filmstarts said that “[t] he story of the old, grouchy loner who discovered his heart actually in the right place through the acquaintance of a child” is not new, but that “the tragic comedy […] of Beginning to end ”and“ really get to the heart ”. In particular, "the excellent cast, led by Bill Murray in absolute best form" from St. Vincent makes "a wonderful film experience in which you can also shed a tear or two".

The film service described the film as “a consistently good comedy, excellently cast against the grain in supporting roles, which draws its humor and verve from the authentically drawn cosmos”, whereby the film slips “a little too much into the sentimental” towards the end.
