Dolemite Is My Name is a biographical comedy directed by Craig Brewer for Netflix that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2019 and was released in US theaters on October 4, 2019. The biography tells of the comedy and rap legend Rudy Ray Moore , played by Eddie Murphy .

action

Rudy Ray Moore's career as a musician has failed, and he is also not very successful as a stand-up comedian and announcer in clubs. Together with DJ Roj and his friend Theodore Toney, he runs a record shop in downtown Los Angeles. It's Toney's job to get rid of the crazy Ricco who keeps coming back to her shop. One day Rudy had the idea to listen to Ricco and his buddies - homeless, drunkards, outcasts of society - their jokes and curses, their slang and their rhymes, which are unbridled vulgar, violent and misogynistic. From this material he develops the figure of "Dolemite", a shrill clad loudmouth and show-off who knocks out one obscenity after the next and always sets his punch lines in rhyme.

"Dolemite" likes to brag about his special sexual abilities and his legendary heroic deeds. Lo and behold: Rudy suddenly has unexpected success with his “Dolemite” stand up program, which hits the nerve of the black ghetto population. With the money his aunt borrows, he produces a “Dolemite” comedy album and distributes it first himself, then with the Bihari brothers as producers. After the great success of this record, he undertook a tour of the southern states, during which he picked up the singer Lady Reed. When he and his buddies watch Billy Wilder's comedy Extrablatt in a cinema, he realizes that only through the film can he achieve real reach and fame. However, Rudy Wilder's film is pointless: "This movie had no titties, no funny and no kung-fu."

Since Rudy has no clue about filmmaking, he teams up with the theater writer Jerry Jones, who is interested in social criticism, and with D'Urville Martin , who has at least once stood in front of the camera in smaller roles as an actor and watches directors such as Roman Polanski at work could. The budget for which Rudy is heavily indebted is small, which is why creativity and improvisational skills are in demand. The film set is set up in a dilapidated hotel that Rudy also moves into. The crew give a couple of white film students. Although none of the participants - above all Rudy - is really up to the project of making a kung fu film, everyone has fun filming it - except for D'Urville, who constantly says that he works with amateurs does not need. When the film is finished, there is no distribution. Rudy is frustrated and goes back to stand-up performances. During a performance in Indiana, Rudy, encouraged by a local DJ and fan, decides to have a one-on-one screening of the film at his own expense, which thanks to great advertising efforts is also a success. A Hollywood producer specializing in blaxploitation films becomes aware of this and offers Rudy the professional distribution of the film.

The film ends with the acclaimed Hollywood premiere. The credits go into the real historical background and show original excerpts from Moore's film from 1975.
