Bob Odenkirk
Robert John "Bob" Odenkirk (born October 22, 1962 in Berwyn , Illinois ) is an American actor , comedian , writer , director and film producer . Odenkirk is best known for his roles as attorney Saul Goodman on the AMC television series Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul , and as co-founder and co-star of the HBO sketch comedy show Mr. Show with Bob and David .
Life
Bob Odenkirk was born in Berwyn, Illinois, and grew up in nearby Naperville with six siblings to Barbara and Walter Odenkirk. One of his brothers is comedy writer Bill Odenkirk . He is partly of German and Irish descent. His father ran a printing company. Odenkirk's father died divorced from cancer . His father's fight against alcoholism influenced Odenkirk's decision to avoid alcohol whenever possible.
Odenkirk has been married to producer Naomi Yomtov since 1997. They have two children together.
Career
Odenkirk began his career as a DJ for WIDB, the campus radio station of the Southern Illinois University Carbondale . He was inspired by comedies like Monty Python's Flying Circus and Second City Television, by comedians Steve Martin , Woody Allen , The Credibility Gap and Bob and Ray, and by a visit to the Second City Theater at the age of 14. After three years in college, Odenkirk decided to make a name for himself on Chicago's comedy scene. First he studied with the improvisation guru Del Close . Odenkirk visited The Players Workshop of The Second City , where he Robert Smigel met and a long association with Smigel began Odenkirk finally to Saturday Night Live led (SNL).
In 1987 Odenkirk was hired as a sketch writer at SNL and worked there until 1991. In 1989 he received his first Emmy in the category Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program . He worked there with Smigel and Conan O'Brien . Odenkirk was unsure of the quality of his skits, which were not effective. In the summer of 1988, he returned to Second City to produce a show with Smigel and O'Brien called Happy Happy Good Show . The following summer the one-man show Show-Acting Guy followed , directed by his friend Tom Gianas. In his senior year at SNL, he worked with Adam Sandler , David Spade , Chris Rock and Chris Farley . He left the series after writing scripts for the fourth season.
In 1991 Odenkirk worked for the television show Get a Life and the following year for The Dennis Miller Show . Odenkirk, who briefly shared an office with Ben Stiller on Saturday Night Live , started working for The Ben Stiller Show in 1992 as a sketch writer and actor. For this series he received another Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program .
From 1995 to 1998 Odenkirk co-produced the comedy show Mr. Show with Bob and David with David Cross . Since 1999, Odenkirk has mainly worked as an actor in television films and series. In 2003 he directed the film Melvin Goes to Dinner .
He became known to an international audience from 2009 through his role as Saul Goodman in the series Breaking Bad . He can also be seen as a supporting role as Artillery-Arthur in How I Met Your Mother . In March 2012 he got a role as a voice actor in the animated horror comedy Hell & Back, which started in 2013 .
In September 2013, Sony Pictures Entertainment and AMC announced an offshoot of Breaking Bad with Odenkirk in the lead role. The first season of the Better Call Saul series started in February 2015. He has been nominated for an Emmy several times for his performance .
His German dubbing voice is that of the German actor Michael Pan .

Awards
From 1989 to 1999 Odenkirk received two Emmys in the Outstanding Individual Achievement in Writing in a Variety or Music Program category and five other Emmy nominations, four of them in the Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program category and one in the Outstanding Music and category Lyrics . Odenkirk received other awards for the 2003 film Melvin Goes to Dinner , which he directed. The film was named best US feature film at the Avignon / New York Film Festival, best feature film at the Birmingham Sidewalk Moving Picture Festival and the Phoenix Film Festival , and the film received the audience award at the Boston Independent Film Festival . For his role as Saul Goodman in the television series Breaking Bad , Odenkirk was nominated for the Screen Actors Guild Award 2012 as part of the ensemble .
