Monkeybone is an American fantasy comedy by Henry Selick from the year 2001 . Sam Hamm's script is based on the cartoon Dark Town by Kaja Blackley .

Stu Miley is a cartoonist, he created the cartoon Monkeybone about a monkey so named. Miley suffers from nightmares, which is why he was told by Dr. Julie McElroy is treated, with whom he falls in love. She inspired Miley for the cartoon that made him successful.

Miley experiences an accident after which he is in a comatose state. In this state he experiences a fantasy world in which he meets Monkeybone . Monkeybone takes over Miley's body by coming to earth. Miley is arrested and meets writers like Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King in prison . He learns about a conspiracy by characters from the fantasy world to take over the bodies of well-known real-world authors.

A fantasy figure frees Miley from prison. He takes over a body and fights against his opponent until both are killed by the arriving police.

Death unites the personalities of Miley and Monkeybone in one body that is sent into the real world.

Reviews

Michael O'Sullivan wrote in the Washington Post on February 23, 2001 that the comedy was funny in places but not consistently enough. The special effects are "impressive".

The lexicon of international films wrote: “A technically successful mixture of real, character and puppet animation, whose poor script, determined by shoddy humor, but never the slumbering in the original ' Dr. Reached Jekyll and Mr. Hyde 'motif. No more than a reasonably scary ghost train ride. "
