Rose Arianna McGowan (born September 5, 1973 in Certaldo , Italy ) is an American actress , author and activist .

Life and professional development

McGowan was born in Italy , the second oldest of six children to an American writer of French descent and an Irish artist, to a colony of the Children of God which the father directed. As a child, she made money as a street musician and as a model for Italian children's fashion publications such as Vogue Bambini .

In the late 1970s, her parents abandoned "Children of God" and moved to the United States. Until then, Rose McGowan hadn't spoken English. Her parents separated when she was ten years old. Five years later, she left her family and lived on the streets for some time. At the age of 15, she allowed herself to be declared adult and made a living doing odd jobs. She then attended a cosmetology school before she devoted herself to acting.

McGowan began her career with a few supporting roles, including in Stone Age Junior (1992). She had her first success with Gregg Arakis film The Doom Generation (1995), for which she received a nomination for the Independent Spirit Award . In the years that followed, it was mainly through the films Scream - Schrei! (1996), Phantoms (1998) and The Sugar Sweet Death (1999) Notoriety. Her acting breakthrough came in 2001 with the role of Paige Matthews in the television series Charmed , which she held until the series ended in 2006. In 2005 she played the actress Ann-Margret in the television biography Elvis .

In 2007 she played the leading role in the first part ( Planet Terror ) and a key role in the second part ( Death Proof ) of the episode film Grindhouse by Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino . In 2009 she was in a recurring role on the series Nip / Tuck - Beauty Has Its Price To See. In 2011 she played the witch Marique in Conan , the remake of the film of the same name from 1982 . In 2013 and 2014 she appeared as a young Cora in two episodes of the series Once Upon a Time .

In 2014, McGowan made her directorial debut with the 17-minute short film Dawn . The film was shown at the Sundance Film Festival 2014 and received mostly positive reviews. As announced in January 2015, she will direct the thriller The Pines , based on a script by Alex Mar.

In autumn 2015 she released her first single RM486 . Her autobiography Brave was published in January 2018 . There are numerous differences between the edition published in the USA and the English version, despite the identical format and font size. In total, the missing parts of the UK version add up to over 10 pages.

Private

Until the separation in 2001 McGowan was in a relationship with the rock musician Marilyn Manson for three and a half years . She broke off the engagement because of the different lifestyles. From 2007 to 2009 she was in a relationship with the director and producer Robert Rodriguez and engaged to him from autumn 2008 until the separation. The chapter of her autobiography in which she deals with her time with him is called Destruction . She raises serious allegations against the filmmaker, describes him as a domineering and pathologically jealous tyrant who, among other things, demanded a polygraph test to clarify whether she was having a relationship with Quentin Tarantino.

She publicly explains some of the plastic surgical interventions that she had carried out in early 2007 as the consequences of a car accident. In her autobiography, however, she later made it clear that her management had advised her to make this statement. In truth, a necessary operation on her sinuses went fatally wrong, which is why she subsequently had to undergo repeated operations.

In October 2013 she married the artist Davey Detail. They separated in May 2015 and have been divorced since November 2016.

Weinstein scandal

In October 2017, she was one of the first actresses, along with Ashley Judd, to raise allegations of sexual harassment against producer Harvey Weinstein and to start the so-called Weinstein scandal . Other allegations were made by actresses Gwyneth Paltrow , Rosanna Arquette and Angelina Jolie , among others . Asia Argento and Lucia Evans accused him of rape. As a result, Weinstein was released from the Weinstein Company on October 8, 2017. A few days later, McGowan tweeted that Weinstein had raped her too. As early as October 14, 2016, she first pointed out the alleged crime by writing in response to the hashtag #WhyWomenDontReport that her partner at the time had sold her rapist the distribution rights to the joint film. Obviously Robert Rodriguez was meant , who never publicly commented on this fact, but only distanced himself from Weinstein in a short statement after the revelations. McGowan also accused other well-known people of complicity, including Ben Affleck .
