action

Gordie Boggs and Sean Dawkins are two quirky birds, as they are in the book. Although labeled by their fellow men as eternal losers, the two drivers of a faeces truck regularly become ardent wrestling fans when they watch the stars of the WCW on television . They are particularly fond of the (fictional) athlete Jimmy King, the crowd favorite and reigning heavyweight champion. When the league is guesting nearby with the show “ Monday Nitro ”, Gordie and Sean take the opportunity to see their star up close and make their way to the hall with their truck.

What the two of them (and also the viewers on the television screen) do not notice: the power struggle has begun behind the scenes at WCW. Although everything has been agreed, the quota-hungry promoter Titus Sinclair betrays the in real life self-indulgent Jimmy King in his title match against Diamond Dallas Page . Page is secretly awarded the title and secures it with the help of several ring colleagues, who knock King down in the ring in front of all fans. Gordie and Sean, who are also in the audience, are horrified.

After the initial shock subsided, they both decide that they have to do something themselves and bring Jimmy back to the top of the WCW. After a long search, they finally find Jimmy: burned out and burnt, he vegetates in a shabby dump and fears returning to the ring as much as the confrontation with his ex-wife Eugenia. Gordie and Sean take on Kings and train him with the help of the old ring fox Sal Bandini until Jimmy is finally who he used to be again. The two are supported by Sasha, one of the dancers of the show troupe "Nitro Girls", who starts an affair with Gordie.

After several hours of work, Jimmy is fit again and challenges Page to a title match during another WCW show, which he immediately accepts. A little later, however, Sinclair played his last trump card: the title fight between King and Page will be held as a so-called "Triple Cage Match". To win, the fighter must bring the title belt to himself, which is attached to the ceiling via three pyramid-shaped steel wire cages. In addition, the wrestlers may use objects that are hung in the cages against each other.

The match takes place at a major event and Jimmy struggles to assert himself, as Sinclair uses every opportunity to harm his former protégé. Among other things, Gordie finds out that Sasha works for Sinclair and that the flirtation should only serve to sabotage progress with King. In the end, however, Jimmy King, with the help of Gordie and wrestler Bill Goldberg , manages to throw Page through all three cages and secure the lost heavyweight title.

Jimmy is back at the top of WCW and reconciles with Eugenia, while Sean and Gordie are celebrated as heroes.

Reviews

Roger Ebert criticized in the Chicago Sun-Times of April 7, 2000 that Oliver Platt was miscast in the film.

Awards

Scott Workman was nominated for a Taurus Award.

Remarks

  • The film was shot from August to December 1999 and grossed twelve million US dollars in the United States .
  • Ready to Rumble was realized with the help and assistance of the wrestling league “ World Championship Wrestling ”, which also produced the film. The film also featured countless superstars and titleholders at the time, who practically played themselves. The following wrestlers can be seen: Bill Goldberg, Diamond Dallas Page, Steve "Sting" Borden , Bam Bam Bigelow , Juventud Guerrera , Van Hammer , Curt Hennig , Prince Iaukea , Disco Inferno , Konnan , Rey Mysterio , Perry Saturn , Randy Savage , Booker T , Sid Vicious and ring announcer Michael Buffer .
  • WCW , which was still in existence at the time of shooting, used the film and all the media hype around it to get itself back into business and the headlines. In the spring of 2000, leading actor David Arquette was built into the storylines for this purpose, who was also allowed to hold the WCW World Heavyweight Championship title for a short time . He put this at risk at the major event " Slamboree " against wrestlers and supporting actors Diamond Dallas Page and Jeff Jarrett - in a triple cage match similar to the one in the film. Arquette lost the title to Jarrett.
  • Similar to his colleague David, Scott Caan also tried his hand at wrestling and did all of his film stunts himself.
  • Oliver Platt was doubled by Chris Kanyon in the wrestling match against Diamond Dallas Page . Kanyon was himself a wrestler and a good friend of Page, with whom he was involved in a feud at the time of David Arquette's guest wrestling appearance. Kanyon can also be seen as a fan between viewers.
  • David Arquette's real brother Lewis is the film brother of Fred.
  • In the scene at the gym where Jimmy King tries to win Bill Goldberg over to his cause, today's WWE wrestler John Cena can be seen for a brief moment . He is the bodybuilder who sits down at one of the exercise machines.
