action

The student Josh Morrison observes the New York starry sky with his telescope when a small metal ball falls from the sky, smashes through the window of his children's room and lands in his aquarium. Three months later, an alien spaceship the shape and size of a person lands on Liberty Island . The small beings from the planet Nile inside are looking for the sphere that had previously fallen to earth in order to overcome the energy crisis on their home planet. The captain of the spaceship discovers people's character traits and emotions and takes a liking to them. Over time, more and more crew members take on human characteristics and rediscover themselves. Finally, the captain, called "number 1", renounces the implementation of the plans to exploit the earthly resources that would destroy life on earth.

The captain is relieved of command and taken prisoner by his deputy "number 2", who perceives the conditions in the spaceship as chaotic and endangering the mission. Meanwhile, the spaceship is being arrested by the terrestrial police who have followed its trail since landing. However, under the control of “Number 2”, who is completely fixated on fulfilling the original mission, it breaks out of the examination cell, not without leaving considerable damage. The captain is referred with the meanwhile in love with him "number 3" of the spaceship. On the streets of New York, they then have to master a number of dangers, which they also reveal their feelings for one another. With luck and skill they will return to the spaceship and will be able to take control of it again, because the majority of the crew also see planet earth as worth saving. With the help of Josh, who provides the aliens with the necessary energy boost in good time, they leave Earth. On the way back, the captain is willing to appoint "number 3" as the new deputy. With the words that that won't be enough for her, they kiss.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the premise was good for a television film that would become a feature film through the participation of Eddie Murphy ("This is made-for-TV material dressed up by Eddie Murphy's participation into a theatrical release"). No other actor involved is as amusing as Murphy.

Joe Leydon described the film in Variety on July 14th, 2008 as a pleasant surprise, as the worst fears of the cynics had not been confirmed. The amusing film is intended for a similar audience as Dr. Dolittle . It works best in those moments in which the special effects are used sparingly, which Murphy himself allows "to shine as a special effect". The critic praised the actor's funny body language.

Awards

The film received a 2008 Teen Choice Award nomination in the Summer Comedy category.

Eddie Murphy was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in the categories "Worst Actor" and "Worst Film Couple" because he played an alien on the one hand, and the spaceship transporting him (with Murphy's appearance) on the other.

In 2010 Murphy was finally awarded a Golden Raspberry in the “Worst Actor of the Decade” category for his portrayal in I Spy (2002), Pluto Nash - In the Fight Against the Moon Mafia (2002), Showtime (2002), Norbit (2007), Home the spell is loose (2009) and man, Dave! (2008) excellent.
