action

Jack McCall is a successful literary agent. He cheats various things in his private and professional life by lying to people and harassing them. His next business coup is to publish the book by the successful New Age guru Dr. Sinja for sale. He whispers to him that he has read his book and is enthusiastic. Thereupon he promises the reluctant Sinja to market the book in his sense. To celebrate his success, he goes to his demented mother, who, however, thinks he is his father Raymond, who left the family when Jack was little. Problems are also waiting for him at home, as his wife really wants to move out of his house because she thinks it is not suitable for children.

Meanwhile, the house is ravaged by an alleged earthquake, but Jack discovers that a tree has grown in his garden that he had previously kept with Dr. Sinja had seen. He confronts the guru, who tells him that he is now connected to the tree and that it is losing a leaf for every word spoken by Jack. If the tree lost all of its leaves, Jack would die. To support him, the guru travels to Bolivia, where he meets like-minded people, and promises to speak to Jacks Baum as well. The fact that Jack is now stingy with words does not of course benefit his fragile marriage and business endeavors. As it turns out, Dr. Sinja's book is only five pages, which makes it even more difficult to sell. On top of that, his humiliated assistant Aaron takes advantage of the situation and ruins a business conversation.

Returning from his trip, Dr. Sinja Jack, who has since been fired by his boss, to put his affairs in order. Jack takes this to heart and makes all those rejected by him happy. He also poses as Raymond to his mother, and she advises him to overcome his inner anger and forgive Raymond. After visiting his wife and son, he tells them in four words how much he loves them and finally drives to his father's grave. This is where he uses his last three words to tell him that he will forgive him. Then he faints, but can go on living because the tree has grown new leaves and even flowers.

He writes a book about his experiences called "A Thousand Words", which he lets his assistant sell, who has taken over his job as a literary agent. He also bought the house his wife wanted for himself and his family and even had the tree moved to his garden.

“Stupid comedy whose plot forces comedian Eddie Murphy into a pantomime role that he's not up to. The crude esotericism and the breaks in the narrative logic are particularly annoying. "

“The purification of the Schnatterer may be accepted as inevitable, but the way there could be made fun. Robbins and Murphy manage to remain so uninspired silly that after half an hour you would like to step on the screen with the leaf blower and speed things up. "

“Well, Murphy is pulling level with Jim Carrey when it comes to grimacing. It's nice to look at when he makes phone calls with the help of talking pawns. But in the long run it seems tough, as if screenwriter Steve Koren and director Brian Robbins ('Smallville') had to work their way from gag to gag. At times the film seems to have a serious approach, but uses the mallet method to bring the saying 'talking is silver, silence is gold' closer to the audience. Then again, 'A Thousand Words' tries to be weird. Ultimately, neither of the two ideas works. "
