action

Football is ubiquitous in the small Texas town of West Canaan. The games of the local football team Coyotes are celebrated by everyone and they never lose a game thanks to their star quarterback Lance Harbor. The district championship is now within reach. But three games before the end of the season, the exceptional player was seriously injured on the field and involuntarily brought in substitute quarterback Jonathon Moxon, who doesn't care too much about football. However, the compulsory replacement quickly becomes a stroke of luck for the team, as it brings the team forward through new moves and ideas and does not want to tear off the winning streak under his leadership.

But every success has its price and soon he is quarreling with coach Bud Kilmer, since he is not at all enthusiastic about the new hero and his independence. He threatens him not only to be kicked out of the team, but also with the prevention of his scholarship at Brown University . When Moxon's success goes to his head, he also comes into conflict with his girlfriend and his life.

In the all-important season finale, Moxon's life is at a turning point. But he manages to resolve the conflict with the coach and to unite the team stronger than ever before. Jonathon receives his scholarship and the city celebrates its new, unusual hero.

criticism

The Lexicon of the International Film said: “A film that only appears to be critical of sports, which sets counterpoints to the prevailing ideology, but then changes position to tell the well-known story of the boy who faces his test. With the exception of Jon Voight as an unscrupulous coach, rather pale actors are grouped around the listless game. "
