action

In a retrospective, the story of the wizards of Acheron, who received godlike powers through the power of the bone mask, is told. In order to develop its power, the magical artifact must be filled with the pure blood of the magician's daughters. Then there are hardly any limits to the user of the bone mask, it can even bring the dead to life. With this power the wizards of Acheron destroy entire armies and enslave many peoples. The tyranny of sorcerers was only ended by a barbarian-led uprising. The mask is smashed and the fragments hidden in secret places scattered around the world. A fragment also remains with the barbarians.

The film begins with a raging battle in the course of which Conan's mother is badly wounded. Despite her serious injury, she is still able to give birth to her son with the help of her husband and whisper the name Conan to him. Birth on the battlefield is a powerful omen that Conan portrays as a born warrior.

Young Conan grew up with his father Corin, the armourer and leader of the Cimmerians. During an initiation rite, in which he is the youngest of the test subjects, Conan kills a group of adult enemy attackers while his fellow test subjects flee. This act secures him the place in the circle of adult fighters. From then on he practices sword fighting, instructed by his battle-tested father. In doing so, he shows an excess of stubbornness, strength and a berserk-like anger in everything he does.

While an enemy army raids Conan's home village, Corin is struck by an arrow and captured. The leader of the attackers, Khalar Zym, searches for the fragments of the bone mask in order to harness the power of the mask after putting it together and thus to awaken his dead wife. Corin is tortured by Khalar Zym and robbed of his sword. Witnessing the torture, Conan leaves his hiding place and mutilates Lucius, one of Zym's followers, before he too is captured. Zym's supernatural daughter Marique finally tracks down the fragment in the forge. Corin is chained to a crucible hanging above him and cut in the leg. Only his teenage son can help him to stand upright by pulling on the other side of the hot chain. Khalar Zym has the village set on fire, leaving father and son to die. While the forge catches fire, Conan's father realizes the hopelessness of the situation. Since he knows that Conan will not let go of his will, he pulls the chain and relieves him of his hopeless task so that both do not perish in the fire. The liquid metal pours over Corin and he dies in front of his son. Conan survives and leaves his home. He goes around the world with a few companions, becoming a notorious pirate and a merciless fighter.

Twenty years later, Conan works as a mercenary together with the Zamonran pirate Arthur. Both men raid a slave camp and bring the survivors to Messantia. The serpent cult has spread throughout the city, and Conan sees Lucius, now captain of the watch, again in a small garrison. He lets himself be locked up on purpose in order to find his archenemy Zym via Lucius. After Conan escapes his cell, he tortures Lucius and learns that Zym is looking for the last pure-blooded descendant of the wizards of Acheron in order to unleash the power of the mask with his blood. Satisfied with this information, Conan leaves Lucius to the freed prisoners. Ela-Shan, a thief who was freed by Conan from the torture under Lucius, offers Conan his help as a thank you. All he had to do was ask about him in Arlagon, the city of thieves.

Khalar Zym and his troops attack Shaipur Monastery where they suspect the pureblood. The abbot Fassir orders his pupil Tamara to flee back to her hometown and sends her off in a carriage captured by Zym. Zym accuses Fassir of being responsible for killing his wife Maliva, who was executed by priests for using her forbidden magic. Fassir defends the fact that Maliva would have wanted to bring about the downfall of all Hyboreas. In anger, Zym kills Fassir, while Marique realizes that the pure-blood is no longer in the monastery.

Conan becomes aware of the carriage with the mark of the mask, saves Tamara from pursuing soldiers Zyms and takes captain Remo prisoner. Since Conan is sure that Zym won't recognize him, he hurls Remo with a catapult into Zym's warehouse, gagged with a message in which Conan offers Tamara for sale. When Zym and Marique arrive at the meeting point, Conan reveals his identity and challenges his father's killer to fight. Marique helps her father with magic by growing fighters out of the sand and injuring Conan with a poisoned throwing blade. Weakened in this way, Conan runs the risk of being defeated by Zym, but Tamara is able to intervene and both flee on Arthur's ship after jumping off a cliff into the sea. Arthur stays on his ship while Conan goes ashore to overthrow Zym. Arthur gives Tamara a card on which Conan has entered his destination so that she can follow him. Tamara finds him in a cave where they love each other passionately. The next morning, Tamara is captured by Zym's men on her way back to the ship.

Recalling Ela-Shan's promise, Conan travels to Argalon to ask Shan to take him to Zym's fortress. You can enter through an underwater cave and defeat a monstrous octopus and the guards there. Then they discover that Tamara is being led into the cave of skulls for sacrifice. Conan says goodbye to Shan and sneaks alone into the cave where Zym and Marique are preparing the sacrifice of Tamara. Zym has already let Tamara’s blood flow into the mask, activated it and put the mask on. When Zym tries to bring Maliva back to life, Conan attacks Zym. The mask then triggers an earthquake. Conan is able to free Tamara, who flees into the cave. Marique pursues Tamara and engages her in a duel. Conan rushes to Tamara to help, chopping off Marique's hand and Tamara pushing her into an abyss, where she is impaled on a pillar. As Zym and Conan continue their fight, Zym threatens to kill Conan with his own father's blade. Conan snatches the sword from him with his bare hand on the blade. While Tamara and Conan are fleeing further earthquakes, Zym discovers his daughter's dead body and swears vengeance. Tamara breaks in on a bridge, but is able to hold on to a chain that Conan grabs. Zym discovers the two and reunites the rite that is supposed to bring Maliva back to life. Your mind takes more and more possession of Tamara's body. To avoid this fate, Tamara asks Conan to let go of her so that she falls into the depths. But Conan instead destroys the part of the bridge Zym says on it, causing it to crash and die. Tamara and Conan escape before the earthquake collapses the Skulls Cave.

Conan brings Tamara back home. There he says to her: "May we meet again!" Then Conan travels to his home village and puts his father's sword on his grave.

background

The Bolata Bay on the Black Sea

The film was shot in Bulgaria , mainly in the Nu Boyana Film Studios near Sofia. In addition, film scenes were shot at various other locations in the country, such as the stone formations Slatnite kamani in the Vitosha Mountains and Pobiti Kamani near Varna , as well as the Prochodna cave near Lukowit , the Bolata bay near Kawarna , etc.

The film celebrated its 17 August in France Premiere in the US, the film opened on August 19, in Germany on September 8, 2011th

Rose McGowan's role was originally called Fariq and is male, but she convinced the producers to rewrite the role and hire her for the role.

The remake has a different story as a basis, but there are allusions and parallels to the original film. As in the original, Conan's vengeance campaign is justified by the murder of his family, and the later help of a thief was also taken over. Furthermore, the fight with an oversized snake was replaced by an octopus-like monster. The secret of steel and the understanding of the sword are also central to the film. The Amazon-like lover Conans, the snake cult and the final battle were completely deleted, which in turn is due to the changed story basis.

Reviews

“The direction devotes a lot of energy to atmospheric certification of an archaic world in a permanent state of war, but gambled away this plus with a slick dramaturgy; the meaningless dialogues and the stiff posturing of the actors contribute to the involuntary comedy of a superfluous attempt to reanimate a legendary but rightly forgotten film. "

“The Frankfurt Conan director Marcus Nispel, born in 1963, is, by the way, the same year as Quentin Tarantino, a former video store employee. In contrast to Grobmotoriker Nispel, however, Tarantino discovered the once unintentional artistic added value of chapped B-movies as a recipe for success and, for example, composed an energetic best-of of those dusty video cassettes with Kill Bill - and converted trash into the category of 'valuable'. But what does that mean in a time when even a dull head off! Nonsense like Conan 3D is given a 'valuable' rating by the voluntary self-regulation. They're crazy, the youth activists! "

- Birgit Roschy - The time

“Although the Schwarzenegger film remains a reference point at times, the new Conan is just so traumatized that the plot gets going well. The father's constant command to understand steel also remains a quote. Instead, the new edition is more clearly based on the already very episodic short stories and offers an abundance of evil monsters, nasty witches, dark tombs and chopped off heads. The comparatively moderate use of computers is aesthetically pleasing: Nispel relies on breathtakingly beautiful landscapes (location: Bulgaria) and good decorating skills. So the Conan figure degenerates a bit into a slogan knocking beau from the solarium, but it creates something that Pulp Stories originally stood for: lustful triviality. "

- Thomas Groh - The daily newspaper

“Conan's world is one without mercy, where the strong triumph over the weak. Ruled by tyrants, magicians, necromancers, slave traders and other poorly digestible figures. Surviving in this world means having a gloomy disposition yourself and making short work of the abundant enemies. Here one does not ask, but takes what is desired with the sword in one hand and cunning in the other. Conan is not an easy-going character with good manners and a warm civilized smile. He looks more like an honorable gangster, a tyrant with a sense of order. "
