Phantoms is an American thriller by Joe Chappelle from the year 1998 . Dean Koontz wrote the screenplay based on his own novel Unheil über der Stadt from 1983. The film opened on August 6, 1998 in German cinemas.

action

The doctor Jennifer Pailey and her sister Lisa come to Snowfield in the mountains. They discover that all the local residents have disappeared or are dead, and that some bodies are mutilated. Sheriff Bryce Hammond and his people joining from headquarters are investigating the case. They are assisted by the scientist Timothy Flyte, whom the notified government agencies consult. Investigators discover that the city has been attacked by an ancient, petroleum-based alien being who has carried out similar attacks in the past. In one of them the Maya were destroyed. Timothy Flyte calls this being The Old Enemy . The survivors try to kill the being, which can take the form of the life forms it has devoured. This is said to be possible with the help of oil-eating bacteria. A duel begins between Flyte and the part of the being that he calls the mother substance .

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that it was a "shame" that the film wasn't a little better. Some interesting ideas would not be implemented effectively enough. The portrayal of Ben Affleck seems "lifeless"; Rose McGowan and Joanna Going had pretty faces, but little to do apart from reciting a few "trite" lines of dialogue.

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times of January 23, 1998 that the film "degenerate quickly" into another thriller, which is about who would be caught ("the movie quickly degenerates into another one of those Gotcha! Thrillers" ).

Awards

The film was nominated for the Saturn Award in 1998 for Best Horror Film.

background

The film was shot in Denver and other locations in Colorado . It grossed approximately $ 5.66 million in US cinemas .
