Tetrapolis (Syria)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tetrapolis in Syria was an ancient four-city alliance that was founded around 300 BC. Was founded under Seleukos I and consists of the cities of Antioch (today Antakya in Turkey), Seleukia Pieria (today Samandağ in Turkey), Apamea (near the small town of Qalaat al-Mudiq in Syria) and Laodikeia (today Latakia in Syria ) duration. The plan of these four cities was basically the same, there were rectangular residential areas of about 120 by 57 meters, which were separated by a street grid. The layout of these cities created the economic and cultural basis for the Hellenization of Syria.
