The film is based on the novel Little Women by the American writer Louisa May Alcott . This was published in England under the titles Little Women and Good Wives in two parts, which formed the prelude to Louisa May Alcott's children's and youth literature. Little Women I wrote it between May and July and published it in October 1868, after the end of the American Civil War, the second part it published in April 1869.

The plot and theme of the first part are strongly autobiographical. It is about the four sisters Jo, Meg, Betty and Amy March. Since the father is in the army, the women have to cope with their life after the American Civil War without any patriarchal leadership. Although the girls are very different, they are all equally fearless and experience one adventure after another.

Alcott had written Little Women especially for girls. Later works like A Story of Experience were feminist development novels. As the daughter of the philosopher Amos Bronson Alcott , unable to support his family, she was forced to support her three sisters and her parents from an early age and, while living in poverty in Fruitlands Commune , the need for financial independence became apparent aware of what made her a writer in later years.

Previous film adaptations

The first US theatrical adaptation of Little Women with the German title Vier Schwestern with Katharine Hepburn and Joan Bennett was made in 1933 under the direction of George Cukor . In 1949, Little Brave Jo was followed by a version starring Elizabeth Taylor and Janet Leigh , directed by Mervyn LeRoy . In 1978, a two-part US television version was produced, and in 1994 a film adaptation by Gillian Armstrong with Betty and her sisters , in which Winona Ryder , Kirsten Dunst , Claire Danes and Christian Bale played. An early British film adaptation from 1917 is considered lost. In 2017, a 3-part television multipart with Maya Hawke and Emily Watson was broadcast on the BBC in the UK and PBS in the US. In 2018, Clare Niederpruem's modern interpretation of the subject was published under the title Four Sisters . Under the title A Happy Family , an anime series (Japanese 愛 の 若 草 物語 Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari, literally: The story of the young grass of love) was published in Japan in 1987, which is also based on the book by Alcott.

Directed by Greta Gerwig , as it became known in summer 2018. Originally the American director was only supposed to adapt Alcott's novel for the film, but after the success of her film Lady Bird , she was also entrusted with directing it. The new edition of Little Women is supposed to focus on the lives of the girls after they have moved from home, to jump back and forth between childhood scenes and the present and to portray the personal developments of Meg, Jo and Amy. In the summer of 2018, producer Robin Swicord , who had already adapted Alcott's novel for Betty and her sisters and also co-produced the film , commented that , in contrast to earlier adaptations, the film mainly covers the second half of the book, with the March sisters becoming young adults are: "He takes a look at what it means for a young woman to enter the adult world," Swicord said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in early July 2018, and Gerwig's view of the novel has them all more than convinced to bring something new to the screen.

Reviews and grossing results

In December 2018, IndieWire named the film one of the 20 most anticipated films of the 2019 cinema year. It is rated positively by 95 percent of all critics recorded by Rotten Tomatoes and received 8.6 out of a possible 10 points.

Hannah Pilarczyk from Spiegel Online writes that Greta Gerwig rearranged the story of the four March sisters so cleverly and short-circuited it with the work and biography of Louisa May Alcott that it feels excitingly new. Gerwig staged the ideal image of a white female youth without patina, but also without attempted modernization. She opposed universalism with a liberal feminism that celebrates individual excellence. This reinterpretation can be argued ideologically, but cinematically it works wonderfully.

Sidney Schering remarks that while previous Little Women adaptations have given little or no thought to taking into account the intimate to heated "shipper talk" that the Bildungsroman caused, Gerwig throws herself into her film adaptation with a passion for problem solving, but also with it Heartfelt admiration for the original, in this topic: "The Lady Bird filmmaker rearranges Little Women in the adaptation she wrote, and does so with passion and an intellectual eye for narrative parallels and dramaturgical ellipses." Attractive levels, as Gerwig's newly structured version of Little Women on the one hand allows a breath of fresh air, on the other hand he mentions the romantic aspect: “In her Little Women interpretation, Gerwig demonstrates a fabulous intuition for how the audience can be guided during storytelling, so that it endorses the love affairs, which in the end as a happy ending of the story e Because Gerwig tells Little Women non-chronologically, she also gives this costume drama a modern dynamic, according to Schering. He also notices the work of cinematographer Yorick Le Saux , who bathes the film in a soft light that lets the calm, atmospheric compositions speak for themselves, and the work of the composer Alexandre Desplat , which underlines the event with delicate, varied melodies that the The emotional state of what is shown reinforced without pushing into focus.

The budget of around 40 million US dollars is offset by worldwide income from cinema screenings of 209.1 million US dollars, of which the film grossed 108.1 million in North America alone. In Germany it has 501,839 visitors, which puts it at number 11 in the 2020 annual charts .

Use in school lessons

The online portal kinofenster.de recommends the film from the 8th grade for the subjects English, German , ethics , art and social studies and offers material for the film for the classroom. Birgit Roschy writes there that the four sisters, with their courage for self-realization, invite young people of today to identify with them. Based on this, the film offers starting points for social studies, ethics and history lessons for a consideration of the legal and social position of women from then to now.
