action

In the small American town of Dillford, people, vampires and zombies live in more or less peaceful coexistence. At the beginning of the film, teenagers Dag, Petra and Ned are still human. Dag fell in love with his neighbor and classmate Lorelei and tried to lose his virginity with her. Ned, a childhood friend of Dag, is a typical nerd , is bullied by his classmates and is not valued by his father. Due to the outsider position of Ned, Dag had ended the friendship with him. After another argument with his father, Ned lets Jenna, a zombie, bite him and mutates into a zombie himself in order to get rid of his worries. In the meantime, Petra has let herself be bitten by the vampire Milan, who had previously played his eternal love for her, but completely ignored her after the bite.

While the three teenagers are trying to cope with their problems, a UFO appears over the city and seemingly overpowering aliens bombard all residents of all races with rays that seem to kill them. The races suspect each other of making pacts with the aliens and attack each other. Ned's father and brother are bitten by zombies; Lorelei is killed out of jealousy by Petra, who has meanwhile become a vampire. Ned, Dag and Petra manage to save themselves in a cellar. In order to be able to counter the common threat posed by the aliens, they pull themselves together despite their differences. They come up with the plan to put Ned, who is stupid as a zombie, on brain deprivation, whereby he should regain his mental powers and find a strategy against the aliens. While searching for Dag's parents, Ned is apparently killed by an alien. However, when Ned meets Dag and Petra again in high school, it turns out that the alien rays only teleport those struck and that most of the residents are still alive. As Dag and Petra grow closer, Ned's intellect was able to recover enough to realize that the aliens only want one chemical that is present in the ribs produced in the city. Together, the three teenagers free the city's residents, who, despite resentment, are forced to work together to get rid of the aliens. Among them is Lorelei, turned into a vampire.

When they arrive at the rib factory, the residents give the aliens the chemical. It turns out that they had only harmless motives, but were forced to temporarily imprison them due to the mutual slaughter of the Earthlings. Meanwhile, Milan attacks Petra, who, however, succeeds in killing Milan with the help of Dag, who has unexpectedly mutated into a werewolf because of the full moon. Later, the residents, unwilling to be instructed by the aliens, attack them. Dag and Ned manage to defeat the aliens and their ship. At the end of the film, life in Dillford has largely returned to normal; Ned gets along with his brother and father and Dag and Petra are a couple.

production

Initially, a film was planned with the title The Kitchen Sink with partly different actors. However, after the original director Jonah Hill was replaced by Robbie Pickering, the plans were changed and the title later adapted. Filming for the film took place primarily in Los Angeles and Vancouver , began on August 15, 2013 and lasted 37 days.

The film was originally scheduled to be released on January 9, 2015, but Sony has repeatedly postponed the release date. The film finally came out on October 30, 2015, just in time for Halloween.

reception

"The ideal way to watch the film would be with your hand on the fast forward button, stopping when Key, Leary, Odenkirk, and Oswalt are on screen and skipping through when they are not."

"The best way to watch the movie would be with your hand on the 'fast forward' button, pausing when Key, Leary, Odenkirk and Oswalt are on and rewinding when they are not."
