Martin Brest (born August 8, 1951 in New York City ) is an American film director , screenwriter and producer .

Life

During his time at New York University , Bronx- born Brest made his debut Hot Dogs for Gauguin in 1972 with the then completely unknown Danny DeVito . In addition to his directorial work, he began to write, produce and publish the scripts for films. This is how, for example, Hot Tomorrows from 1977 was created for the American Film Institute . Warner Bros. became aware of him: at the age of just 27, he shot the film The Pensioners Gang for the studio in 1979 with the venerable Hollywood legends George Burns , Art Carney and Lee Strasberg .

The film revealed Brest's professional maturity beyond its real age, and for a while it seemed like Hollywood had spawned yet another “child prodigy”. Brest was working on the thriller WarGames when, as a result of a disagreement with the producers of MGM , he was suddenly removed from power and John Badham took over. Brest was sidelined for almost two years and only got a minor role in the teenage comedy I Believe I Stand in the Woods (1982) with Sean Penn .

In 1984 he made a brilliant comeback as a director with the blockbuster Beverly Hills Cop - I'll definitely solve the case , which became one of the most successful films of the 1980s. In 1992 he received two Oscar nominations for The Scent of Women , for best director and for best film. He came away empty-handed, but Al Pacino won the trophy for best male leading actor. After the equally successful rendezvous with Joe Black in 1998, Brest experienced love with risk in 2003 - Gigli experienced an embarrassing failure. The romance with Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez flopped at the box office, was nominated for the Golden Raspberry in almost all categories and in 2005 was named “Worst Comedy of Our First 25 Years”. After this film he has not appeared as a director (as of May 2019).

In 2009, Hot Dogs for Gauguin was recognized by the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress as a particularly valuable film. In addition to his work as a director, Brest also works as a producer. The films he produced included the youth film Josh and SAM

Brest is married to the film producer Lisa Weinstein and has a son from this marriage.
