action

The homeless Jerry Baskin has lost his dog and is sad to commit suicide. He jumps into the pool of the Whitemans who live in Beverly Hills . The rich clothes hanger maker David Whiteman saves him.

Jerry moves in with the Whitemans. David dresses him up, lets him drive his car, goes out to dinner with him and tries to find a suitable job for him. But Jerry is not interested in a job. Instead, Jerry turns the completely neurotic Whitemans family upside down with his calm and calm manner, whereby even the family dog Matisse is not spared. After a night on the beach with Jerry and his homeless friends, David becomes much calmer inside. With a Balinese massage , Jerry releases the cramps in David's wife Barbara and at the same time causes her to orgasm. After that, Barbara is mentally tidy and goes back to bed with her husband David. Jerry encourages the homosexual son of the family, Max, to come out to his parents because he thinks they will understand. Jerry gets books with communist content for the illegally immigrated housemaid. This makes her confident and rebellious, and David can no longer cheat with her as he did before. Finally, it normalizes the appetite of the anorexic daughter Jenny. She grabs the Christmas party buffet, which Papa David is very happy about. At the Christmas party, the son and his 'friends' appear as band members. When Papa David realizes that all band members use make-up like his son, he is very shocked. When he also learns that Jerry has gone to bed with his daughter Jenny, and the daughter is now thinking about more solid future plans with Jerry, he explodes and tries to drown Jerry in the pool. The party ends in total chaos.

The next morning, Jerry follows up on his threat and leaves the family. He gives David his clothing back. The Whitemans give him their dog, and Jerry takes him back out onto the street. He explains to Matisse how beautiful her free life will be from now on. Near the Whitemans' house, he finds garbage that he and his dog used to eat. But Matisse doesn't want to eat it. Jerry tastes it and suddenly finds it disgusting himself. He turns to see the Whitemans standing in the street smiling. He sighs and returns to the family home. Everyone is grinning. Only David looks like he's not sure if it wouldn't have been better if Jerry had left.

Reviews

  • Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on January 31, 1986 that Paul Mazursky had made a film based on close observation of the characters. The director lives in Beverly Hills and knows the district. Richard Dreyfuss plays with a lot of energy, Bette Midler is the ideal cast for the role of Barbara Whiteman.
  • The lexicon of international films says: Despite some clichés, trite jokes and puns, the material has enough substance for an amusing satirical story about prosperity neuroses and social contradictions; well played, ingeniously staged.
