Boudu , full title Boudu - Ein lovable Schnorrer , is a French comedy film by Gérard Jugnot from 2005. It is a remake of Jean Renoir's Boudu - Saved from the Waters from 1932, which in turn was based on the play Boudu sauvé des eaux by René Fauchois .

action

Gallery owner Christian rescues the homeless Boudu, who wanted to take his own life, out of the water. Christian actually planned to seduce his intern Coralie on the canal, as he can no longer stand the marriage to his depressed and bedridden wife Yseult. Boudu, in turn, saw no more meaning in life after the death of his dog Clinton. Now he blames Christian for his survival and follows him to his villa. He is allowed to stay in the gallery overnight, even if Christian gives him strong sleeping pills and so hopes to be able to take him to a hospital. The plan goes wrong, but the next day Boudu complains of severe pain. The doctor diagnoses urinary stones and orders Boudu to stay in bed for several days, which he spends in Christian and Yseult's house. In contrast to her husband, Yseult flourishes because she can take care of Boudu. After a long time she goes out of the house and goes shopping at the market. She makes Boudu wash himself and cooks for him. Meanwhile, Christian goes to the canal and meets the homeless Géronimo, who tells him that Boudu once killed his wife and was therefore even admitted to the clinic. In return, Geronimo killed Boudu's dog.

Christian warns Yseult about Boudu, but he is not heard. He gets help from his wife's psychiatrist, but he can't do anything either. In addition to the private ones, Christian is also plagued by business problems: artist Hubert, who is the only one to exhibit in Christian's gallery and whose pictures are always in high demand, has an uncreative phase, which means that Christian is facing ruin. However, he cannot get his star to paint new pictures. In order to solve at least one of his problems, Christian finally urges Boudu to move out. Yseult buys him an expensive suit at the train station and finally realizes that she wants him. Both sleep together and Yseult pragmatically postpones Boudu's move for a week. This week, in turn, Boudu discovers his feelings for the devout Coralie, who lives in the same house as Christian and Yseult. He also sleeps with her and eventually plans to marry her. Meanwhile, Yseult learns that her recent attacks of dizziness, which used to be the result of her former alcohol addiction, are now a result of her pregnancy. Christian is not very impressed, but after an unsuccessful suicide attempt, resigns himself to the fact that his wife is expecting a child from Boudu. With a fit of anger, he gets the artist Hubert to find his creative streak again. Christian's financial problems are a thing of the past with the rush to see Hubert's new pictures. Christian and Yseult become a couple again and Coralie's parents are spared Boudu as a son-in-law because he decided to renounce Coralie's marriage and instead go back to Géronimo and the Canal. Géronimo's wife was not killed by him once, but died in a traffic accident. Clinton, on the other hand, is not dead, but only got lost on a barge and is now being brought back to Boudu, so that life seems to make sense for him again.
