The Producers is a movie of the US director Susan Stroman from the year 2005 . It is a film adaptation of the 2001 musical of the same name , which was successfully performed on Broadway in New York and in London . Both are based on the comedy Spring for Hitler by Mel Brooks from 1968. The film was produced by the film studios Universal and Columbia , among others .

action

1959 in New York City : Max Bialystock, a formerly extremely successful theater producer on Broadway , is out of luck. One day his accountant Leo Bloom has an idea. He suggests to Bialystock that in the future he should only raise more money than the actual pieces cost. The trick is that the pieces have to be so bad that they have to be taken out of the program shortly after the premiere. They expect that in such a case, investors will hardly ask for their money back.

Your first production according to this scheme should now be the extremely tasteless musical Spring for Hitler by the crazy Nazi Franz Liebkind. However, the musical surprisingly turns out to be a success and overturns Bialystock's and Bloom's plans.

History of origin

The Producers is based on the 2001 Broadway musical of the same name, which was critically acclaimed and won twelve Tony Awards . Mel Brooks , who developed The Producers based on his 1968 film Spring for Hitler ( The Producers ), was responsible for the theater production. For the 2005 film version, Broadway director Susan Stroman was hired, who was also involved in the New York production and will make her directorial debut on the big screen with The Producers . Mel Brooks wrote the script together with Thomas Meehan , with whom he had already worked on the adaptation of Frühling for Hitler on the theater stage.

With the exception of the new cast of Will Ferrell and Uma Thurman , all actors in the musical version could also be won over for the film version. Because of questions prospective tax benefits filming from 28 February 2005 began in the newly built Steiner Studios in Brooklyn , New York and not as originally planned in the Canadian Toronto . When the film crew moved in, the film studio was only 90 percent complete and you had to wait until the roof, among other things, was completely sealed. The production costs of the film are estimated at 45 million US dollars (approx. 37.5 million euros). The film is said to have grossed a little over 38 million US dollars.

Reviews

" The Producers is just a missed opportunity."

"Uma Thurman as a wannabe actress is that little bit of real glamor in this aggressive and pointlessly glowing, noisy spectacle."

"You can't kill all the laughs, not from a Mel Brooks script, but Stroman sells Brooks songs with the delicacy of cannon fire."

"Enough is enough. Somebody should just stop the remake of The Producers . "

"With hundreds of appearances in New York and London under their belts, the characterizations of Lane and Broderick have lost fire."

“So how good is the film about a musical about a musical? The answer is: he's darned good. "

“The staging is based on the classic musicals of the 1950s, and the film impresses with its perfect unity of dance, song and action, which elicits remarkable dancing skills from the actors. Unrestricted pleasure, also due to the excessive playful mood of all actors. "
