Roger Allers
Roger Allers (* 1949 in Rye , New York ) is an American film director , screenwriter and animator .
Life
Allers grew up in Scottsdale , California. He studied fine arts at Arizona State University and after completing his studies came to the Lisberger Studios, where he worked as an animator for Sesame Street and The Electric Company, among others . In 1978 he went to Los Angeles with Steven Lisberger , where they both worked on the film The Jungle Olympics . He was also involved in the film Tron , a co-production by Lisberger Studios and Walt Disney Productions . Allers left Lisberger in 1980 and worked for Nelvana Studios in Canada. He returned to Los Angeles in 1985 and was hired as a storyboard developer at Disney. His first Disney film was Oliver & Co. , released in 1988. He worked as a storyboard developer on such films as Ariel, the Mermaid , Beauty and the Beast, and Aladdin .
Allers first directed the animated film The Lion King , together with Rob Minkoff . He and Minkoff won the LAFCA Award / Best Animation from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association . With Irene Mecchi he then wrote the screenplay for the musical The Lion King , which premiered on Broadway in 1997. He received a Tony nomination for Best Book in 1998 with Mecchi . Allers directed the short animated film The Little Matchgirl for the second time , for which it received an Oscar nomination in 2007 in the “ Best Animated Short ” category . After working at Disney, Allers joined Sony Pictures . He worked there as a director for Sony's first animated film, Jagdfieber , which was released in 2006.
Allers lives in California with his wife; the marriage has two children.
