The Little Matchgirl is an American animated short film directed by Roger Allers from 2006. It is based on the story The Little Girl with the Sulfur by Hans Christian Andersen .

action

In the wintry, snow-covered streets of a large Russian city, a little girl is selling sulfur sticks. The passers-by ignore the girl, who even stands on a lantern base to draw attention to herself, but she is lifted down by the lighter. The girl retires to a backyard. It freezes, because it doesn't even have proper shoes on, and so after some hesitation it ignites one of the sulfur sticks. When the light shines, it imagines a stove and wants to warm itself up on it, but the match suddenly goes out. The second ignited wood leads to the idea of a richly laid table, the third to the imagination of a sleigh ride that ends at a stately villa. A good-natured old lady opens the door and looks at the girl with delight. When this idea threatens to disappear when the match is burned down, the girl lights all three remaining matches. In its imagination, it hugs the grandmother's wife and a door opens to reveal a richly decorated Christmas tree.

The lights of the tree turn into the stars of the sky. The frozen girl lies in the snow. The ghost of the old woman appears and takes the ghost of the girl with it.

production

The Little Matchgirl was originally planned as a segment of Fantasia 2006 . The film, which was to be made following Fantasia 2000 , was never realized in this form. Instead, the short animated films designed for the film were released separately. The Little Matchgirl combines traditional animation with computer-animated elements. The film premiered on June 5, 2006 at the Festival d'Animation Annecy . It was also released in 2006 on the special edition DVD of Arielle, the Mermaid .

The score for The Little Matchgirl is Alexander Borodin's Nocturne from the Second String Quartet in D major, Opus 55.

Awards

The Little Matchgirl was nominated for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ” in 2007, but could not prevail against The Danish Poet - A Love Story . As early as 1938, The Little Match Girl, an animated short film on the same topic, received an Oscar nomination in the same category.
