The Little Match Girl is a 1937 American animated short film directed by Arthur Davis .

action

A little girl sells matches on the wintry streets of New York City , but no one is interested in their goods. When it looks hungrily through the shop window of a baker , other passers-by laugh at her.

The girl retires to a little corner near a house, where she lights a match, sticks it in the ground, and warms her hands. In her imagination she imagines a large open fire. The wind blows her match, which is why she lights a second one and now dreams of a large four-poster bed. The second match is blown out, too, and so she lights her third and final match.

She dreams of going to heaven, is surrounded by flowers and angels and receives a doll as a present. The angels dance around them, but suddenly a strong wind comes up and sweeps away all the glory. Even the doll is pulled out of the girl's hand, and it finds itself in a winter landscape. With her last strength she reaches a lonely burning candle, which melts before she can touch it. The picture changes - the girl lies motionless in front of the last extinguished match.

An angel comes and takes the girl. It shines on the angel. Together they float up into the sky and eventually become one of the numerous stars .
