Priscilla - Queen of the Desert is an Australian tragic comedy directed by Stephan Elliott from 1994, which tells of the journey of three drag queens through the outback .
action
Bernadette, aging, transsexual and currently widowed, Mitzi, a married drag queen and a part-time cosmetic consultant, and Felicia, a homosexual drag queen, are three travesty artists in Sydney . One day Mitzi received an engagement in a hotel in the Australian outback, in Alice Springs . So the three of them decide, for different reasons, to go on the trip. Felicia acquires a decommissioned school bus from three Swedish tourists, which she names Priscilla . This is the start of the tour across the Australian outback.
In the no man's land the drag queens meet stuffy residents, Aborigines and endless desert, which leaves more than enough space for the smaller and larger internal tensions of the on the one hand very similar, but on the other hand very different tour group. On the way to Alice Springs Bernadette and Felicia learn the secret of Mitzi on the side: He is married to a woman he has been separated from for six years and who runs the hotel where he is performing.
The three of them experience some eccentric adventures along the way. In Broken Hill , Mitzi has to redeem a losing bet by walking around town in a fumble. During a repair stay, the three get to know Bob, an older mechanic who lives with a young woman, a former stripper , whom he married at some point in a drunkenness . Bob repairs the bus, which breaks down again immediately, and so after his wife has left him he accompanies the group to Alice Springs. On the way he and Bernadette get closer. During a stay in Coober Pedy there is a hunt for Felicia, who barely escapes physical abuse .
Once at the hotel, it turns out that Mitzi also has a son. He wants to hide his life as a drag queen from this and dresses very masculine. While on a trip to Kings Canyon together , Mitzi learns that his son knows his story when he asks if he can make friends again when they are in Sydney. At Kings Canyon , Felicia also fulfills her dream of climbing the mountain by hand; Bernadette and Mitzi accompany him. After several, not entirely successful performances, the return journey should begin. Bernadette doesn't come back to Sydney with me, but stays with Bob, who has taken a job at the hotel to find out if they are a match. Mitzi with son and Felicia drive back to Sydney, where they perform again.

Reviews
“Simply staged, directly provocative outsider road movie in the dialogues, which gains an exotic effect from its dazzling protagonists and the strange scenery of the desert. Behind the surface stimuli, however, the underlying conflicts and problems threaten to get lost. "
"Cheeky-bizarre road movie from Down Under"
music
The soundtrack for the film consists mainly of songs from the 1970s to 1990s, from the Village People to Gloria Gaynor to CeCe Peniston and Vanessa Williams . There are many references to ABBA , but only one song on the soundtrack ( Mamma Mia ).
useful information
- With To Wong Foo , a film released in 1995 Patrick Swayze , Wesley Snipes and John Leguizamo in the lead roles, the same issue picks up, but plays in America. The production of To Wong Foo began even during the filming of Priscilla .
- The film was voted seventh among 250 nominees in 2006 by viewers of the US television station Logo , as part of the Logo's 50 Greatest LGBT Films poll. The US remake To Wong Foo, thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar , however, could not make it into the top 50.
- Only one bus was used in the entire production of the film. However, since the film was not shot according to the sequence of the plot, the bus was painted pink on one side and lavender on the other. Depending on the situation, it was filmed on one side or the other of the bus.
- Tony Curtis was originally intended for the role of Bernadette . Curtis' wife reportedly advised him not to accept the role.
