John Leguizamo (born July 22, 1964 in Bogotá ) is a Colombian - American actor and comedian .

Life

John Leguizamo was born in Bogotá to Alberto and Luz Leguizamo. According to his own statements, his ancestors come from Puerto Rico , Italy and Lebanon . Leguizamo came to New York with his family in 1969 . The family lived in different neighborhoods in Queens. After graduating from high school , he studied drama at New York University . Leguizamo then learned the art of acting under Herbert Berghof . It is often falsely claimed that Leguizamo learned the art of acting under the guidance of Lee Strasberg , but he only had one lesson before Strasberg passed away.

Movie and TV

He had his first acting engagement in 1984 in the film Mixed Blood - The rats of Harlem by director Paul Morrissey . This was followed by films such as The Damned of War , Die Hard 2 and In Dinge Henry until his breakthrough in 1991 with Hangin 'out - 4 Homeboys Unterwegs . In the next few years he was in Carlito's Way , William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet , To Wong Foo , Moulin Rouge , Einsame Decision , Arabian Nights - Adventures from 1001 Nights and Land of the Dead, among others. He also played the role of Luigi in Super Mario Bros.

John Leguizamo is also active as a voice actor, for example as the sloth Sid in Ice Age and its sequels. He was also seen in a recurring supporting role in the twelfth season of the television series Emergency Room in 2005/06 .

With his stage programs Leguizamo is one of the recognized comedians in the USA. His solo programs Mambo Mouth (1991) and Spic-O-Rama (1993) have received numerous awards. His program, first performed in 1998, has been nominated for two Tony Awards .
