Ice Age 2 - The Meltdown (English title: Ice Age: The Meltdown ( about Dt. : Ice Age: the fusion)) is an American computer animation film from 2006. It is the sequel to Ice Age from 2002. Director Carlos Saldanha was again the director of the extremely successful comedy film, and Jon Vitti wrote the screenplay . The film was produced by Blue Sky Studios for 20th Century Fox . The series was continued in 2009 with Ice Age 3 - The dinosaurs are loose and in 2012 with Ice Age 4 - Fully postponed . Ice Age followed in 2016 - collision ahead! .
action
In the film, the same characters play with the mammoth Manni, the saber-toothed tiger Diego and the sloth Sid as in the first part, and there are also Ellie, a female mammoth , the two possums Crash and Eddie, and the dashing Tony, an armadillo .
The ice age is over and the valley they live in will shortly be inundated with meltwater. A glacier has formed at one end of the valley and prevents the water from flowing away.
Diego, Manfred and Sid have to warn all residents of the valley and flee their home with them. When a vulture tells the group about an ark at the other end of the valley, the group sets off to reach the ark in order to flee the valley with it.
The rat squirrel, Scrat , has other problems as well: a vulture stole its acorn and hid it in its nest.
Meanwhile, Manfred is depressed because he thinks he is the last mammoth on earth - until he meets the mammoth female Ellie. Ellie feels like an opossum because she grew up with opossums and only knows their customs. For example, Ellie tries to sleep on a branch, which, given her size, is doomed to fail. Manni has a lot of hard work to do to convince Ellie of the opposite.
Sid also gets to know Diego's secret: He is afraid of water. But especially in the masses of water lurk dangers such as B. the Deinosuchus Cretaceous (a prehistoric crocodile) or the giant Dunkleosteus Maelstrom (an armored fish). These two prehistoric animals, which are actually already extinct, have been released from the thawing ice masses.
Only when Sid and the opossums are in danger, Diego can overcome his fear of water and save them. Shortly before you reach your destination, your path is cut off by a dangerous geyser field . Ellie and Manfred get into an argument, and so they part ways. While Manfred, Sid and Diego cross the field and reach the other animals, Ellie is locked in a cave and threatens to drown. Crash and Eddie seek help from Manfred, who can rescue Ellie after a dramatic underwater battle with Maelstrom and Cretaceous.
Scrat can now steal the acorn from the vulture's nest. When he buries her on the glacier, the ice splits. The dam has broken, the water flows out of the valley and all residents are saved. Here Manfred and Ellie also meet other mammoths. For a brief moment it seems that the two of them are going their separate ways, but finally they find each other.
Scrat, in turn, falls into the gap and is overwhelmed by the masses of water. He comes to in heaven, where he is surrounded by countless acorns. But when he tries to touch a huge acorn (symbolizes God; a scene reminiscent of The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo ), he is caught in a suction and brought back to earth: Sid saved him from drowning. Because Sid took him out of the sky , Scrat shows his karate skills, which he had previously used in piranhas .
Reception and financial success
The premiere took place on March 31, 2006. The German theatrical release was on April 6, 2006. On the subsequent cinema tour, Otto Waalkes , spokesman for the character Sid, traveled for a week through numerous German cities in order to set the mood before and after the film with the “Ice Age Song” care (among others with Stefan Raab in TV Total ).
The feuilletons of reputable German daily newspapers were full of praise for the character of Scrat and reported enthusiastic reactions in cinemas when he appeared on the screen. In the Süddeutsche even the philosophy was tried: “If the concern about existence - as Heidegger remarked - is the decisive existential of all living beings, then this concern increases with Scrat to panic. Scrat's popularity certainly has to do with the fact that he embodies a feeling of panic, terrified by disasters, right down to the trembling tips of his claws. ”(Rainer Gansera: A memorial for Scrat!, April 6, 2006)
The lexicon of international films wrote: “Completely computer-generated animated film, which in terms of content can hardly be linked to the previous one, but visually raises the level. As in the first part, especially the primeval croissant Scrat offers unclouded pleasure. "
The budget was around $ 80 million. In the US, the film grossed $ 68 million at the box office on the opening weekend. This is the highest grossing result in a March in US theaters. The first part had brought in "only" 46 million dollars in the same period. Worldwide, Ice Age 2 recorded more than 660 million dollars.
In Germany, 440,000 visitors saw the film on the launch day. This was the best start for an animated film in German cinemas. After only seven days the film received the golden screen for 3.3 million viewers and after 14 days the golden screen with a star for over 6 million viewers. As a result, Ice Age 2: Jetzt Taut’s 2006 became the most successful animated film in Germany with 8.7 million visitors and the most successful film in Germany in 2006.
Ice Age 2 opened in Austria with 284,793 viewers, making it the best weekend to start. With 1.185 million, the film received the only Diamond Ticket in 2006 and became the most successful film in Austria that year.
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
backgrounds
The depicted event of the ice reservoir emptying itself by melting glaciers in a catastrophic flood can be geologically proven, especially on the American double continent, and has been scientifically researched since the 19th century. The Missoula Lake ( Missoula floods ) and the Agassizsee are mentioned here . The sudden runoff of Lake Agassiz probably had a significant impact on the earth's climate.
The vultures sing the song Food, Glorious Food after Sid wondered what they were thinking. The song comes from the musical Oliver .
The official novel of the same name for the film was published by Xenos in March 2006 with the title Ice Age 2 - Das Buch zum Film . The authors were Jennifer Frantz and Peter Clarke . In February 2006, an anthology was published with the novel and the first part of the novel. This time it was written by Glenn Dakin and published in German by Dorling-Kindersley-Verlag .
