Spun (also Spun - Leben im Rausch ) is an American film that was shot in 2001 in California . Served as director of the mainly by music videos became known Jonas Åkerlund , whose experimental style next to the music of Billy Corgan and the numerous cameo appearances of famous musicians is characteristic of the film. The film was released in theaters on August 7, 2003 in German-speaking countries.
action
The film shows three days from the life of Ross, a young slacker . Since almost all of the people portrayed are under the influence of drugs during the entire film, their actions are not always logically understandable. So Ross leaves his "girlfriend" naked, tied to the bed, gagged and with taped eyes alone to run a short errand, and then does not return for hours (the CD that he put in for her entertainment begins to her misfortune in that The moment he leaves the room).
When Ross wants to buy methamphetamine from his friend Spider Mike and he has nothing left in stock, Nikki, who is also present, refers him to the Cook, who produces the drug himself. Ross promises to give him enough meth in return for a few favors. Ross agrees, whereupon he plays the driver for the Cook and his girlfriend Nikki with their dog over the next few days until the Cook's room burns down on the third day, which is why he has to drive into town with Ross to equip himself. The cook then sets up a new laboratory in a caravan. While the exhausted Ross sleeps in the car, the trailer explodes.
particularities
In Spun a number of famous musicians appear in cameos on. So Rob Halford as a sex shop cashier to see Deborah Harry as Ross 'neighbor, Ross' girlfriend freed, and Billy Corgan as a doctor. Alexis Arquette also plays a methamphetamine drug investigator and Ron Jeremy plays a bartender . The main actor himself was also a musician at the beginning of his career. In one scene you can see him while his former band Phantom Planet can be heard in the background .
Almost throughout the production process, care was taken to visualize the drug experience of those involved. The film is characterized by many fast cuts, zooms and cartoon sequences , which is why it has also been compared with films such as Trainspotting and Requiem for a Dream .
Soundtrack
The soundtrack compiled by Billy Corgan contains a large number of different pieces of music, their interpreters and others. a. Ozzy Osbourne , T. Rex , Satyricon , who are Caesars , Silverbullit , Åkerlund's former band Bathory and repeatedly Corgan's former band Zwan . The latter can also be heard during the opening credits, with an acoustic cover version of the Iron Maiden classic The Number of the Beast . Furthermore, Zwan reinterpreted the Scorpions piece Loving You Sunday Morning .
No soundtrack album was released for Spun, for which the high costs and the too large number of songs played are responsible.
Criticism and response
The magazine Cinema gave the film its highest rating and judged: "Brutal, funny and remote: a film can not get much closer to a drug trip ". The film was not very successful in American cinemas: it was only shown in 24 theaters and grossed a little over 400,000 dollars on a budget of just under 3 million US dollars. The DVD version proved to be more successful .
