Phantom Planet is an American alternative rock band from Los Angeles . It was founded in 1994. The name of the band is a reference to the science fiction film The Phantom Planet from 1961. The band became famous through the song California for the series OC California as the title soundtrack.

history

In the late 1990s, the band played a few concerts in and around Los Angeles and made a name for themselves. In 1997 they got their first record deal with Geffen . The following year they released their debut album, Phantom Planet Is Missing , which received only moderate success with the critics.

In early 2001 they went back to the studio to produce the follow-up. Tchad Blake ( Pearl Jam , Sheryl Crow ) and Mitchell Froom ( Elvis Costello , Paul McCartney ) were brought in for support. A year later, The Guest was released on the Dreamworks label . In Germany, the album was best known for the title song California from the television series O.C., California .

In August 2003 Jason Schwartzman decided to leave the band. Nevertheless, you can still hear him on the third album Phantom Planet , which was released in 2004.

In mid-2004, the song "Big Brat" became known through the video game Driver 3.

November 2008 the band announced that they would not play any more live concerts. On the band's Myspace page it was expressly stated that it was not about a breakup, but only a little "break".

reunion

On November 4, 2011, Phantom Planet announced via Twitter that the band would reunite in 2012. The first reunion concert was scheduled for June 13, 2012 in Los Angeles.
