action

Victor Rosa sold in New York City District Bronx a heroin type settings, as the empire is called. The district is divided into districts by the drug dealers; they are supplied with the drugs by the drug baroness La Colombiana .

Victor's girlfriend Carmen takes him to a party that her friend Trish and Trish's partner Jack are giving away. Jack works in the financial industry and invests Victor's money with high profits. The men become friends while Victor is estranged from his previous friends.

Jack suggests a deal that promises a profit of 300 percent - but a sum of millions must be invested. Victor turns to La Colombiana , but they demand a 500 percent profit. She also wants the dispute between Victor's friend Jimmy and another dealer to be resolved. Jimmy kills his opponent and is then killed by La Colombiana himself .

Victor gives the money to Jack, who turns out to be a fraud and goes into hiding with the money. Victor finds the scammer in Miami and tries to get the money back. Unsuccessful, he kills Jack and Trish. He and Carmen then flee to Puerto Rico . In the end he is tracked down there by La Colombiana and killed.

Reviews

The lexicon of international films wrote that the film was "an ambitious gangster film about the change from illegally amassed money to clean balance sheets, set against the background of a prosperous money market that is fair to any source ". He captivates " unbroken by the breathtakingly cast female supporting roles ", but in the end loses " his narrative line ".

Kevin Thomas wrote in the Los Angeles Times on December 6, 2002 that the film was " compelling " and " absolutely uncompromising ." John Leguizamo gave one of the best performances of the year in a leading role in an American film. However, with its combination of ethnic problems and violence, the film slips down a familiar track too easily.
