action

Two years after retiring as a kick-ass, Dave Lizewski is dissatisfied with his everyday life and tries to reconnect with his old superhero life. He persuades his hit girl friend Mindy Macready to train him so that they can become effective partners in the fight against crime. Mindy's guardian Marcus, a close friend and colleague of her late father, wants Mindy to lead a normal life and forbids her from any activity as a hit girl. When he finally catches her in costume after another training round with Dave, Mindy has to promise him to finally put an end to her super identity. Dave's girlfriend thinks he has a relationship with Mindy and breaks up with him. But it is not easy for Mindy to become a “normal” girl either: She makes friends quickly, but due to an intrigue of the school diva Brooke, all hope of acceptance and a normal life is finally shattered.

Meanwhile, however, the hatred of Kick-Ass smolder in Chris D'Amico, whom he blames for the death of his father. After he accidentally kills his own mother when he triggers a short circuit in her tanning bed, he inherits the family fortune and immediately works out a massive campaign of revenge. With his money he establishes a super villain identity called "The Motherfucker" and begins to put together his own "super villain" troop, consisting of "Black Death" (an African-American boxer), "Genghis Khan" (an unemployed triad thug ; original English name "Genghis." Carnage ")," Tumor "(a short-grown murderous man) and" Mother Russia "(a former KGB agent), who becomes Chris' personal chief killer.

Meanwhile, while looking for a new partner, Kick-Ass finds a connection with another superhero, "Doctor Gravity", who then introduces him to a local superhero group called "Justice Forever": "Colonel Stars and Stripes", a refined Mafia henchman and born again Christ ; “Remembering Tommy”, a couple of parents who, after the unsolved kidnapping of their son, resorted to superhero activity to help other people; "Night Bitch," a street girl whose sister was murdered; “Insect Man”, an avowed homosexual who is committed to being discriminated against , and “Battle Guy”, in which Dave recognizes his school friend Marty Eisenberg.

Together, Justice Forever begins community service and also breaks up an Asian crime ring that exploits juvenile forced prostitutes , but in doing so, Kick-Ass's membership in the group catches Chris's attention. Dave and Marty begin to estranged themselves from boyfriend Todd Haynes, and even when invited to Justice Forever, he bitterly parted ways with his friends after Dave and Marty criticized his choice for his superhero name ("Ass Kicker"). Dave's father finally discovers his costume and tries in vain to persuade his son to stop.

Meanwhile, Chris begins his campaign of revenge against Kick-Ass by storming Justice Forever's headquarters with his gang and having Colonel Stars and Stripes of Mother Russia murdered. Then they go to Night Bitch, whose name and address have been archived by the Colonel at the headquarters, mistreat them badly and kill ten approaching police officers after Chris tried unsuccessfully to rape them. The chief of the New York Police Department then decides to crack down on all costumed people, be they heroes or villains. In the course of this action, Dave's father is arrested by the police in his place. Chris D'Amico finally learns from Todd, who is naively looking for a new connection in his group, that Mr. Lizewski is Kick-Ass's father, and has him murdered in his detention cell.

At the funeral that follows, Chris' men attack the funeral company and kidnap Dave to carry out an execution, but Mindy, who also attended the funeral, manages to save Dave. In this fight, she kills six of Chris' people, including Genghis Khan. Mindy and Dave find out where Chris is hiding from Tumor, who was the only one of the kidnappers to survive, and reassume their superhero identities for one last confrontation with Chris. Dave expands his costume by adding a bulletproof vest.

Meanwhile, Chris plans to carry out a series of bombings in New York with his super villains, but less for terrorist reasons and more to wreak havoc and destruction. The corresponding bombs have already been built. Together with the survivors of Justice Forever and an army of volunteer superheroes, kick-ass and hit-girl invade Chris' villain club and embroil his hired army in a mass brawl.

In the midst of the fray, Todd finds his way back to his friends' side; Mother Russia is killed by hit girl after a tough fight and Black Death is badly injured; and Chris, who still refuses to give kick-ass or take sanity, eventually drops through the skylight of his clubhouse into a shark pool below, where he is attacked by his own pet after Dave tried to get him in before he fell to save death. The super villains are eventually defeated by the superheroes, and the survivors are tied up so the police can pick them up and arrest them. After the action is over, Justice Forever, together with hit girl and ass kicker, salutes the late Colonel one last time and their victory, but Mindy, who fears the police will now be after her, has to leave town to see her foster father protect. She says goodbye to Dave and shares her first kiss with him before leaving. While Justice Forever and all other superheroes are now making themselves useful as normal everyday heroes in society, Dave trains hard for the day when superheroes may still be needed again.

In a post-credit scene , it is shown that Chris survived his fall into the shark tank. He is lying in the hospital bed with stumps of his hand and arm bandaged bloodily, cursing and trying to reach a drinking cup with his mouth.

background

In May 2012 it was announced that Matthew Vaughn was in talks with Universal Studios for a sequel to Kick-Ass . Vaughn, who for lack of time only took over the production of the film, chose Jeff Wadlow as director and screenwriter. A month later, Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Moretz signed for their roles as kick-ass and hit girl . In July 2012, Christopher Mintz-Plasse announced that he would return as Chris D'Amico under his new alter ego The Mother Fucker . It was also revealed that John Leguizamo would play Javier , one of The Mother Fucker's bodyguards . In September 2012, Jim Carrey was hired to play Colonel Stars and Stripes , founder of the superhero group Justice Forever . It was also confirmed that bodybuilder Olga Kurkulina would play the villain Mother Russia .

Filming of Kick-Ass 2 began on September 7, 2012 in Mississauga , Canada . Filming later resumed in London and ended on November 23, 2012. The film premiered in German cinemas on August 15, 2013.

The film is based on Kick-Ass's second comic miniseries as well as the Hit-Girl comic miniseries, which takes place chronologically between the first and second Kick-Ass comic miniseries.

Chloë Moretz said in several interviews that her portrayal of the hit girl was influenced by her role as Carrie in the film of the same name . In fact, she had only finished filming Carrie, which she describes as the most emotional role in her career so far, on September 7, 2012, and started filming Kick-Ass 2 just three days later. “I think Hit Girl is as emotional as that and made it more dynamic, ”said Moretz.

On June 24, 2013, Jim Carrey withdrew his support for the film. Carrey, who is an avowed supporter of firearms regulation , wrote on Twitter: “I shot Kick-Ass a month before the rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School and to the best of my knowledge I can no longer support this level of violence. Sorry to everyone involved in the movie. I'm not ashamed of it, but recent events have caused a change of heart. ”Mark Millar responded by pointing out that the film does not focus on the violence within it, but on the effects of it. He compared it to works by Quentin Tarantino , Sam Peckinpah , Chan-wook Park and Martin Scorsese . Chloë Moretz commented that violent films teach what not to do and "if you think films are influencing you, you shouldn't watch Pocahontas either because you will think you are a Disney princess".

Reviews

The film met with a largely negative response. On Rotten Tomatoes , the film was rated only 29 out of 100 points based on 153 reviews evaluated. In summary, it says: " Kick-Ass 2 fails when trying to imitate the original mixture of ultra-violence and ironic humor of the first part."

"The sequel fails to develop the characters in an interesting way, so that the mix of superhero and high school film would result in a reasonably coherent plot."

“The satire always turns into bad grief. At best, wit and sophistication lie in the details [...]. In the end, unfortunately, the impression prevails that with this film - this time written and directed by Jeff Wadlow - you just didn't really know what to do with these heroes. "

“In addition to excessive comic violence, plenty of action, brisk one-liners and pitch-black humor, what I particularly liked about the film was that it stayed true to its motto: Every action has consequences - deadly consequences that recapture the cheerful worldview of Kick-Ass straighten a little. In the end, Kick-Ass 2 lags behind Matthew Vaughn's predecessor, because the title hero Kick-Ass by Hit-Girl, who is brilliantly played by Chloë Grace Moretz, is clearly left behind and has now slipped a bit on the sympathy scale as a well-trained womanizer. "

“The sequel is the logical and consistent continuation of KICK-ASS, which, although more focused on the story of the characters, can shine in the action scenes and humorously. KICK-ASS 2 does not achieve the speed and freshness of its predecessor, but there is more than 100 minutes of entertainment, which is ultimately even more faithful to the comic template than many other representatives. And even consider it in some scenes. "

- Deadline-Magazin.de

“Kick-Ass 2 stays in the wake of the first film and occasionally even goes one better. This guarantees some entertaining moments. For example, you can see Jim Carrey in an unusually rough role as Colonel Stars and Stripes, which would be more typical for Woody Harrelson. [...] But Jeff Wadlow's sequel cannot match the charm of the first film, directed by Matthew Vaughn. Especially the fragile elements that Vaughn knew how to use so well caused problems for Kick-Ass 2, and the film sometimes makes an indecisive impression. "
