action

The dilapidated 13th Detroit Police Department is slated to close for the New Year . So there is only a basic cast on New Year's Eve . The alcoholic former undercover agent Sgt. Jake Roenick , the aging Jasper O'Shea and the secretary Iris are doing business when a prisoner van arrives at the station just before midnight. Because of a snowstorm, he has to seek protection from it. In addition to the petty criminals Beck , Smiley and Anna , the notorious gang boss Marion Bishop is also on board. In the meantime, the police psychologist Alex Sabian , who also got stuck in the snowstorm, has arrived at the station.

A short time later, two masked people break into the prison wing of the station, apparently to free Bishop. Alerted by a shot, Roenick can still prevent this. From this point on, the area is besieged by heavily armed attackers. The two guards who accompanied the prisoners die. After initial hesitation, Roenick armed the prisoners in order to defy the overwhelming odds. Bishop explains to him that the attackers did not come to free him, but that they are corrupt police officers who want to silence him. When his colleague Kevin Capra shows up and with Roenick's help he is only able to escape the hail of bullets into the building, he is initially mistaken for an accomplice of the attackers - but is defended by Roenick. In the further course, Beck and Smiley die after trying to escape. Alex Sabian and Anna are also shot while trying to escape.

When the attackers penetrated the roof with a helicopter, the trapped escaped through a tunnel to the outside. There they are received by Marcus Duvall, the leader of the besiegers. It turns out that it was Jasper who betrayed her. He now wants to execute Bishop, but is seriously injured by a stun grenade ignited by him . Roenick and Bishop are able to escape to a nearby forest, but are unable to escape the corrupt police officers equipped with night vision devices. They agree to work together again: Roenick draws the shooters on himself, and Bishop can shoot one of them, but is shot by Duvall. Before Duvall can kill Bishop, he is shot by Roenick, who is also hit. Roenick lets Bishop escape and does not reveal him when he is found by Iris, the fire department and the arriving police .

Differences to the original

  • In the original, a heavily armed youth gang attacks the trapped.
  • The felon is not released in the original, but is handed over to the reinforcements that have arrived after the attack.
  • Bishop is the original name of the policeman, not the criminal.
  • The original is not the 13th Detroit Police Station , but Precinct 9, Division 13 in a run-down suburb of Los Angeles .

criticism

“An experienced action thriller that recycles the premise of John Carpenter's original 'Assault' (1976). Only the game with the flowing boundaries between law enforcement officers and lawbreakers sets the film apart from the average product. "

“Even if the aesthetics are reminiscent of relevant video games at times, the French director Jean-François Richet (' Public Enemy No. 1 - Murder Instinct ', ' Public Enemy No. 1 - Death Instinct ') managed a gripping remake of John Carpenter's classic thriller ' Assault - attack at night '. Above all, the claustrophobic images from the confines of the area are convincing.

Awards

  • Laurence Fishburne was nominated for an Image Award in 2006.
  • Ja Rule received a Teen Choice Award nomination .
  • In 2005 the film won a DGC Craft Award .
