Public Enemy No. 1 - Death Drive is a 2008 French film directed by Jean-François Richet and starring Vincent Cassel and Mathieu Amalric . The film is the sequel to Public Enemy No. 1 - Murder instinct and was released in German cinemas on May 21, 2009.

content

The film begins where the first part, Public Enemy No. 1 - The murderous instinct has ceased and describes Jacques Mesrine's life between 1973 and 1979. Back in France, Mesrine raids banks. Arrested by Commissioner Broussard, he manages to escape from the courtroom. He now enjoys a reputation as an enemy of the state in Canada and France. When the police found him in an apartment, he was arrested without resistance. In prison he asked for a typewriter and used it to write his biography, which was then published. In his cell neighbor François Besse he finds an accomplice for his outbreak. Not only the guards but also Mesrine's lawyer can be bought. She smuggles two weapons into prison that help Mesrine and François to freedom. They get cash in a bank; Bank robberies are Mesrine's business. François is shot while continuing to escape. With the injury, he can hardly make progress in open terrain. Mesrine loses part of its prey in a river that they both cross. François is annoyed by Mesrine's careless handling of the situation and the money. The first tensions between François and Mesrine become noticeable.

They settle in a small town where Mesrine meets the prostitute Sylvia Jeanjacquot. A close connection is created between the two. Mesrine gives an interview to a journalist in which he presents himself as a self-righteous revolutionary. François' intentions, however, are completely different. They part ways.

With the help of a new accomplice, Mesrine kidnaps the multi-million dollar entrepreneur Lelièvre in order to get hold of new cash. Hostage and hostage taker agree on 6 million francs ransom. Lelièvre is treated well and clearly feels comfortable in the care of the kidnapper.

Mesrine and Sylvia then settle in Paris. There Mesrine meets his former companion Charlie Bauer. In him he finds a like-minded person; he too would like to free the prisoners from the maximum security prison. Both know the life behind such walls.

Next, Mesrine takes revenge on the journalist and alleged police informer Jacques Dallier, who calls Mesrine a dishonorable gangster in his “Käseblatt”. This public defamation irritates him to the point of blood. He brutally beats Dallier up in a rock cave and gave him three final head shots, which Dallier surprisingly survived, as he and Charlie find out afterwards. Mesrine's sympathizers are now turning away from him. Even Charlie is critical. Mesrine took it to the extreme. The police have found his whereabouts. Mesrine is about to set off with Sylvia to start a new life in another city when he comes to an end in the hail of bullets from the police.

criticism

“Vincent Cassel shines again in the role of the charismatic gangster, new additions are Bond villain Mathieu Amalric as escapee king François Besse, the swimming pool beautiful Ludivine Sagnier as Mesrine's lover Sylvie and Gérard Lanvin as a left-wing political activist, the Mesrine anarcho-idiot in the Head sets. Public Enemy No. 1 : a must for fans of tough gangster films. Conclusion: Electrifying gangster saga about the most famous criminal in France, which mixes biopic elements with motifs from action cinema. Fast, brutal and hard. "
