action

Several gang members are killed by police officers in a shooting. While the radio reports on the escalating violence of youth gangs and the loss of several automatic weapons, a meeting of several gang leaders takes place in which the "warlords" initiate the "cholo", their campaign of revenge, through a bloody ritual.

The Precinct 9, Division 13 , a police station in Anderson, a rundown suburb of Los Angeles is on the verge of closing. It is therefore only occupied by a few servants, including the policeman Chaney and the employees Leigh and Julie. Lt. Bishop is on duty here for the first time that evening.

A gang of young people attacked an ice cream seller near the office. The leader kills the seller and a little girl. His father, beside himself with anger, takes the salesman's revolver, pursues the gang and finally shoots his daughter's murderer. The rest of the gang followed him, and the man can save himself at the last minute in the spaces of Precinct 9, where he, however, weakened and under shock standing, can not comment on what had happened.

Meanwhile, a prisoner transport is diverted to Precinct 9 because one of the prisoners is seriously ill and urgently needs medical help. The prisoners are housed in cells there while Starker, the supervisor of the transport, calls a doctor. But the conversation is interrupted - it turns out that all telephone lines have been cut and the office, which is located in a barely inhabited street, is cut off from the outside world. Starker therefore decides to go to another office. The bus comes under fire while trying to exit Precinct 9. Starker and the other police officers in the transport are killed. Two prisoners, Wells and the condemned felon Napoleon Wilson, escape the hail of bullets and are brought back to their cells by Bishop. Since the shooters use silenced weapons, no one outside is aware of the situation.

A message in the form of a flag tells the survivors in the area that the youth gangs will take revenge on the father who killed one of their leaders and that they will not stop at anything. Outnumbered and with low ammunition, Bishop decides to let the two prisoners Wells and Wilson out of their cells and to arm them in order to fend off the attackers with their help until reinforcements arrive. In the subsequent shooting, the youth gang tries in vain to overrun the district, but Julie is killed in the process.

Wells tries - after consultation with the other trapped people - to escape the station through the sewer system and to leave the premises with a car parked nearby to call for help. He does get into the vehicle; However, when he arrived at a phone booth, he was shot dead by one of the attackers who was hiding in the back of the vehicle.

As the gang's attacks become more violent as the evening progresses, the survivors Bishop, Wilson and Leigh retreat with their father into the basement, where Bishop manages to detonate a gas container with the last three bullets, which prevents the intruders Kills youngsters. A short time later, the reinforcements arrive and turn over Bishop Wilson.

Deviations from the German dubbed version

The company Berliner Synchron GmbH, under the direction of Joachim Kunzendorf , made considerable changes in the film with regard to the musical and atmospheric design that were not authorized by the director and film composer. Carpenter's decisions to underlay action scenes with music and to suspend them in contrast during the dialogue scenes were ignored in several places. During the dialogue scenes, the German dubbed version now contains parts of the main theme in several places. In addition, certain action scenes were underlaid with Carpenter's soundtrack material, but sometimes with pieces that differ from the original arrangement.

background

  • The film pays homage to the western Rio Bravo by director Howard Hawks with John Wayne and Dean Martin . This relates not only to the plot (a few men defend themselves in a prison against overwhelming odds) but also in individual shots (throwing a rifle clears a hopeless situation, Wilson shoulders his rifle exactly like John Wayne as sheriff).
  • In 2005, a remake with Ethan Hawke in the lead role appeared under the title Das Ende - Assault on Precinct 13 . The remake differs from the original in some important areas. So z. B. from the youth gang a group of corrupt police officers, also the police officer Jake Roenick lets the criminal Marion Bishop (played by Laurence Fishburne ) escape in the end. In the original from 1976 the character Bishop is the policeman.
  • The scene in which the little girl was shot had to be cut after a warning from the US film rating agency MPAA , otherwise the film was threatened with an X rating . Carpenter accepted the request, but then gave the finished film with this scene to the distributor.
  • The besieged area is called Precinct 9, Division 13 and not Precinct 13 , as the original title suggests.
  • The film was indexed in Germany from the mid-1980s to March 31, 2005 . While it was shown in full in the cinema in 1979 with an FSK approval from 18 years of age and was also released in this version for home theater, it was only slightly shortened on television. Since the FSK was re-examined, it has been released from the age of 16.
  • The Tatort: Attack on Wache 08 broadcast in 2019 shows "an over-the-top shoot-out based on Carpenter's film."
  • John Carpenter made a cameo in this film . He's one of the gang members trying to get into the police station through the window. He is shot like the others.

criticism

"Perfect and exciting, the film captivates with its aesthetic design, which of course turns into cynical smoothness in places."

"John Carpenter's second feature film is a fast-paced, action-packed city western whose story is reminiscent of Howard Hawks'" Rio Bravo "and" El Dorado ". With a budget of only $ 200,000 and consistently unknown actors, Carpenter created a nerve-wracking masterpiece. Carpenter not only directed, but also wrote the script and composed the music. In 2005 Jean-Francois Richet shot " Das Ende ", a remake that is well worth seeing. "
