action

After setting fire to a remote house, Kristen is taken to North Bend Hospital, completely disturbed and with no memory of the time before the fire. There she meets four other confused women in the psychiatric ward: Sarah, Iris, Emily and Zoey. Treatment by Dr. Stringer initially remains unsuccessful with all of them: Kristen sees the ghost of a dead girl at night who kills one patient after the other. Kristen is also increasingly attacked by the dead girl or prevented from leaving the clinic.

Over time, Kristen finds out that an Alice lived in the clinic before her. She was never popular with Sarah, Iris, Emily, Zoey and the other roommates. Alice was therefore killed by the others and now takes revenge as a ghost on those who remain. Eventually all but Kristen are killed by Alice. Kristen initially manages to hurt Alice and flee. She runs to Dr. Stringer to finally find out the truth about Alice and her death. Dr. Stringer then explains to her that she is actually Alice: Alice was kidnapped as a young girl and held and abused for over two months in the basement of the house that she later set on fire. She then developed a split personality (Sarah, Iris, Emily, Zoey, Tammy and Kristen). These tried to become dominant and to wipe out Alice completely.

All of her experiences were only in her mind, as her true personality tried to repress the others again. Ultimately, Kristen is also killed by Alice and Dr. A few days later, Stringer explains to Alice and her parents that she will soon be leaving the clinic. The film ends with Alice cleaning out her room, but finally being attacked again by her former and still dominant personality Kristen and relapsing.

Reviews

“The director puts one scary sequence after the next. By combining them with black fades and subsequent leaps in time, the first half of the film in particular looks like a ghost train revue. And with that, The Ward proves to be just a selectively gripping suspense cinema. "

“What is outstanding about this film is the atmosphere and its imagery: Although hardly a word is spoken in the first quarter of an hour, the images tell everything you want to know. Later on, narrow, claustrophobic hallways convey the oppressive atmosphere of the institution to the audience. "
